All of the local Long John Silver’s are being converted into Overboard Seafood and Grill locations, and while the menus seem sort of the same, there’s more emphasis on healthy fish dishes that don’t get the deep-fried treatment.

I’m glad Long John Silver’s has left the Old Pueblo. I try not to hate on things if I can help it, but Long John Silver’s completely creeps me out. It is the only restaurant I could not bring myself to work at during my long and illustrious food-service career, and for good reason: They wanted new employees to sing pro-fried-fish anthems at the orientation, which is a lot more than I was willing to do for minimum wage.

So good riddance Long John Silver’s, and welcome to the way-less-creepy (and greasy!) Overboard Seafood and Grill.

  1. Apparently there was a murder outside the one on Oracle today, so it is off to a terrific start.

  2. I went to check them out on June 25th, 2011. I was disappointed that they had changed the fish and chicken to tiny, short pieces than I was used to. Secondly, the batter was greasy, thick and bland… no seasoning at all! Man am I sad to say this… but I will never go back again… a customer of over 35 years… I WENT THERE ONCE A WEEK… TO GET THAT AWESOME FISH AND CHIPS… BUT IT’S GONE FOREVER NOW! GOODBYE! GUESS I WILL HAVE TO FLY TO PHOENIX FOR THE REAL…”LONG JOHN SILVERS”… OR BETTER YET… THE EAST OR WEST COAST OCEAN-SIDE GRILL! I SURELY HOPE THE OWNER RECOGNIZES THE DIFFERENCE… AND MAKES A CHANGE B4 HE GOES BANKRUPT!

  3. We have went to LONG JOHN SILVERS for years, it was a favorite place for me and my kids. We were sad when we decided to go for lunch and it was changed to OVERBOARD. We gave it a try, we should of went someplace else. The tarter sauce tasted horrible, the fries were nasty and soaked with grease, and no clams! The large drink cost $2.99, I have never heard of any fast food place charging that much for a drink. The worse part was the dirty mop bucket was just sitting out were people are eating. That isn’t what I would call healthy. And on the way out, my daughter noticed that there was no BELL to ring, are you kidding. The LONG JOHN SILVERS in Casa Grande is open it’s a little closer than Phoenix.

  4. Another loss for Tucson. I know chain restaurants have a bad rep, but they have their fans and any decent metro area should have at lease one location of all the majors. It is sad that you now have to drive for an hour to enjoy LJS Fish and Chips. They’ve been a favorite or mine for years. I suspect the owners, who didn’t take decent care of their restaurants anyway, did this to avoid franchise fees. Very upsetting.

  5. LJS leaving is no where near a loss of any kind for Tucson. There concept has been flawed for several years now. The fish was in a pressed sheet not a filet. The batter was overly salty and soaked up grease like a sponge. Did any of you fans out there ever take the time to notice that everything they cooked in grease had that same taste and smell? I liked it when I was about five years old before I knew better but come on. So the owner changes the name to avoid franchise fees and screw his venders that he owes a ton of money too and puts the buisness in his sons name so he doesn’t loose it out right. Then when you go in they say we have fish “like LJS” and chicken “like LJS”. The employees don’t even know the menu. I can only imagine they don’t even have receipes for there menu items in print in the store. We show up at about 6 p.m. and order a hamburger and find out the grill isn’t even on. We have to wait for it to heat up. Mr. owner if your going to do something and roll it out and tell everyone about it at least make some kind of effort to do it right. As my Dad use to say you can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Guess what you still have a sows ear. Next time if you get the chance to do it again at least try.

  6. overboad i had today was awful, and wasnt cooked i got sick and they way over charged me. people are blah blahing about how long john silvers was bad for you, It is up to the person who is buying the food to decide if they care if what they are eating is bad for them. It is not the restaurants responsibly to make you healthy its your problem ,How ever it is their problem to make sure the food is freaking cooked for petes sake thats not ok.

  7. Oh Hell Ya, I can chow down for next to nothing. I cant get enough of this place! The employees know when I show up, I even get free cajun fish just for loving this place. It took some time to break away from LJS but I think I am almost done with sweating old fish grease out. I only plan on living once so i am here to enjoy Overboard as long as I can. I’m ready for more seafood yum yum! Say Hi if you see me..I am the guy with a table full of food all to my self, OH YEA 😉

  8. I just want to say that this place is a HUGE improvement over LJS. The food has a lot more flavor and is real fish and chicken. Not processed crap like Long John Silvers food was. Overboard even has a better variety of food. It ranges from the fried fish and chicken to burgers and wraps. They even have salad bowls there now. Another thing they added was the whole new grilled section. LJS had a freshside grill but it is nothing close to how good this new line of grilled items are. You wont regret trying this place out, the only problem you might have is loving the restaurant too much.

  9. JUST curious as to the dispostion of the 22nd street location with their signage in place and also the Oracle location, which looks as if it’s been ready to open for a month.Today i saw a Longs real estate sign,For Lease,in front of the oracle location.Too bad!
Someone chime in and let me know whats going on with this restaurant.Thank You

  10. LJS corp sued the s&#t out of the owner for violating his franchise agreement. It clearly stated that if he closed his LJS’s he could not sell a similar menu out of the same location under a new name. He also had left some LJS signage on the “converted” locations. This is buisness as usual for the low life J.P. Willingham. At one time under investigation by the U.S. Marshall service. He ripped off investors in Southwest Seafood Shoppes LLC and also embeziled thousands of dollars from the Corp. through the years. He did however make large contributions to the indian tribes in the area. Yes, that’s right he loved the video poker machines at the casinos. He had some interesting accounting practices as well and became very good about padding his P&L’s. He was doing it so blatently that he couldn’t allow his supervisors for his locations to see them because they would want the bonuses that they were due because of his inflated numbers.
