Mountain View High School teacher Derrick Chipres resigned Monday after it was discovered he allegedly entered into an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Chipres, who was an automotive instructor at the school, began working at Mountain View Feb. 8, 2016, according to MUSD Director of Public Relations Tamara Crawley, who confirmed his resignation with Tucson Local Media.
According to the district, school administrators immediately contacted the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Monday, Dec. 9 when students reported an alleged relationship between Chipres and an 18-year-old student.
Following an investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, no arrest occurred, though the school district immediately acted and Chipres resigned from his position.
“We recognize that you may have questions and may also feel a range of emotions surrounding this,” wrote Mountain View Principal Todd Garelick in a Dec. 11 letter to parents. “However, due to confidentiality and personnel laws, we are extremely limited in the information that can be publicly disclosed. I can tell you that this student was not a student in the teacher’s class and the criminal investigation did not result in an arrest.”
Pima County Sheriff’s Department Deputy James Allerton confirmed that detectives investigated Chipres on Monday, and found no criminal activity.

So sad, so sad!!! Hold on to your hat(s). I’m not going where you think I am… So, let me get this straight… 2 consenting adults engage in a lawful relationship; where neither is complaining… No, the students rat out the Teacher AND their fellow classmate. And for what??? My, my….Political Correctness has gotten out of hand. As the story tells us, there was no criminal activity. AND YET Mr. Chipres feels obliged to resign. Under pressure by MUSD I’m certain. My take… Shame on the rats, as this is where the blame belongs. Well, AND the Administration, of course…
It is not a relationship. It is sexual abuse. Sexual abuse of minor is crime. If the sexual contact began previous to the victim’s 18th birthday, it is a crime. Call it a crime.
IF…. Yes, Tim you are correct, of course. The article stated she is 18 and nothing more. AND… Evidently the investigation by the Police turned up nothing. So…. It is not a crime according to Officials. Furthermore Mr Chipres age is not stated (and to some that would matter).
Its a student/teacher relationship. Just as many businesses won’t allow supervisors date their subordinates, because to the vast difference in authority, grade schools don’t allow teachers to date their students. Its not PC-its a recognition of the potential for abuse.
The article clearly said she was 18, to insinuate otherwise is wrong! So in this particular case, what Timmy wrote was out of line! Not a crime … Timmy are you from California?
To be clear, just because the other person was of age the teacher just broke the cardinal rule, do not get sexually involved with the students. Period, especially when you work at the same school, and he was most likely married.
Greetings all, Let it be known that I personally love all the input. Whether I agree or disagree. Well done!!!
The article does not identify the student as a female. It may not know.
