One Access Tucson Positive: The Cox Channel Location Is Better

David Mendez did a superb job of chronicling Access Tucson’s challenges since the 2006 Cox-supported legislation that severely limited community television (“Fewer Voices,” Currents, June 21).

What he forgot to mention is that Access Tucson is moving to the preferred spot of Channel 20 on the Cox system (while remaining at Channel 74 on Comcast).

Thanks for Remembering John Gatty

Just wanted to thank the Tucson Weekly and Ryn Gargulinski for the nice article on John Gatty (“Wonderfully Strange,” Music, June 21). He was an exceptional human being and coder. I will remember his sense of humor in an otherwise dry programming environment. The code patch he installed at Hughes Aircraft that would threaten other programmers’ lives if changed sounds about right.

In addition to his job responsibilities, he was also leader of the company band Flock of SQLs, which played every spring to a packed house of customers and employees. I am a better person for having known John, and simpleview is a better place for having John be a part of it.

Social Promotion Leads to Immaturity

I read Mark Stegeman’s Guest Commentary (June 14) with great interest.

The Tucson Institute sent an open letter to then Gov. Fife Symington about the same issue 19 years ago. We wrote: “Customarily, students are passed to the next grade even if they have done nothing at the previous grade. … This attitude creates irresponsible, immature people who will never do any valuable work, who feel antipathy toward a work environment, who will never tolerate any criticism, must constantly be praised, will always blame others for their failures, and are hostile to intellectual pursuits or achievements.

Symington did not even bother to reply.

  1. Dear Editor:

How about an investigative report on the recent local media blitz by Rosemont Copper? I will be turning off my TV and will boycott any other advertisers until the TV airwaves are cleared of these lying corporate thieves – not copper miners but speculators!

  2. Dear Editor:
Occasionally, for laughs, I watch FOX news. I often leave confused by the experience. In order to be a Republican a person would have to believe,
-Every aspect of Bill and Hillary Clintons’ life is fair game for public discussion, but I have no right to ask why Mitt Romney hides money in Switzerland, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
-Global warming is junk science and creationism should be taught in schools.
-Giving tax breaks to wealthy people is going to help me out.
-Providing free healthcare to all Iraqis is good, while providing healthcare to all Americans is bad.
    -Hawaii is part of Kenya.
-$250,000,000.00 Mitt Romney can relate to my problems.
-Having the House of Representatives destroy the American economy, in order to defeat Barack Obama, is patriotism.
-You can cut revenue and balance the budget.

When I have more time, I might be back with more. There is a lot more.

  3. Your website search feature is an appalling joke. I typed cafe passe and no results. I was looking for the exact date and time of the Morrissey concert. I typed Morrissey on May 27 no #%@’ing result. This website is impossible because of that. If I’m looking for something to do great. But if I’m looking to confirm a date or to look something up you are {negative-great!} Fix IT nOw!!!!!!!!!

  4. have you given any thought on a follow up story on Greasewood Park ? A few years back you had ran a story about in being a gay hang out for men looking for sex…You also reported that the Tucson Police department had been to Greasewood Park and knew first hand what was happening but, backed off due to pleas from Wingspan….We live in the area of the park and used to enjoy walking our dogs in the washes,a place for them to run off their leashes, but can no longer enjoy the park due to the activities that are happening there…Also, I can not believe that Wingspan are useing the park to promote public sex.I have nothing against homomsexuals,i have many gay friends,as well as a daughter who is lesbian…..We only want to be able to once more enjoy the park. Thank You.
