Heeeee’s back! Former state lawmaker John Kromko, last seen trying to defeat the one-cent temporary sales tax that voters approved last week, has filed to run for an Arizona House of Representatives seat in Legislative District 27.
Kromko lost a bid for a House seat in LD 27 in 2008 and ended up getting indicted because prosecutors charged that he had forged signatures on his nominating petitions. Kromko tells us the case is still alive while prosecutors appeal a ruling as to whether the charges need to be reviewed by a grand jury.
It’s a crowded race in LD 27, which includes the university area and Tucson’s west side. Incumbent Democrats Olivia Cajero-Bedford and Phil Lopes have both hit their term limits, leaving more than a half-dozen other Democrats to seek the office. Besides Kromko, you’ve got Bob Gilby, Sami Hamed, Dustin Curtis Cox, John Martin Bernal, Sally Ann Gonzales, Eric Carbajal Bustamante and Macario Saldate.

I know! I was shocked when a signature-gatherer asked me to sign his petition on Friday. The signature-gatherer quickly backed away after seeing the horror on my face. In my naive youth (which was what, 6-7 years ago?) I agreed to be a part of a lawsuit with the famous Mr. Kromko. We sued the Arizona Board of Regents and the state legislature over the tuition hikes at the U of A. Now that I know more about Mr. Kromko and law in general I see that this was a BIG mistake. I pulled out of the lawsuit after it made its way to the court of appeals. But that didn’t stop Kromko from telling a reporter that I was still in. I asked Kromko for a correction and an apology, but got nothing.
And the lawsuit! Oh my god. Knowing what I know now…sheesh, there’s no private right of action to enforce the “nearly as free as possible” bit in the Arizona Constitution and the 11th Amendment likely makes the state legislature immune from suit (and at least promises that you’ll be on appeal for a long time).
Kromko, please go away.
Kromko is our guy. Talks the truth – not good for the establishment in this town.

*Sigh*
Mr. Kromko certainly doesn’t lack passion, but ‘truth’ isn’t his strong suit.
But I am sure he will be endorsed by the Pima Association of Selfish Taxpayers.
