Republican candidate Jesse Kelly, who is facing Democrat Ron Barber in the special election to complete Gabby Giffords’ congressional term, is getting national attention today for his statement that health care is a privilege to be earned, rather than a right. Along the way, Kelly expresses his standard belief that health care, like everything else, would be better if government had no involvement at all. Kelly’s words:

My belief system is this. The health care for anybody but especially for our nation. The highest quality and lowest cost can only be delivered without the government. What I believe is that all things we drive, we do, health care, anything, is a privilege to some extent. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, those are inalienable rights endowed by your creator. If you’re claiming a right, if you’re going to say anything’s a right, if you’re going to say you have a right to a cell phone, then who has the responsibility to pay for it? That’s what I believe.

  1. Is anyone surprised? When last I looked up the word”hypocrite” in the dictionary, I found Jesse Kelly’s picture right there. Not that the other guy is any better. Why are we always voting the lesser of two evils?

  2. Some intrepid journalist ought to ask Mr. Kelly how he expects children to earn the privilege of health care.

  3. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are inalienable rights guaranteed by the US Constitution. Please Arizona, please don’t elect someone that does not even know the difference between the constitution and whatever crazy bible he is reading.

  4. Oh, puh-leeze! He talks about the (lack of) “right” to health care. Big words from somebody who is entitled to a lifetime of great healthcare based soley on a job he held for a minimum of two years. You know what, Jesse? I pay your wages and as your employer, I don’t know why you and yours have the “right” to a far superior health care plan than I could ever afford.

  5. After his terrible run for election in 2010, I came to the conclusion that this person is too uneducated and inexperienced as a person to be given such a job as Congressman. He is so out of the real world in his thoughts and actions that I wonder how he manages to survive in this world; oh, I know, he and his dad’s business takes advantage of the same “handouts” that he rails against. Being against something doesn’t make you right about the matter. Can Jessy Kelly even tell us what life was like before Social Security and the New Deal? The rich (those who earned the right to a good and secure life) were filthy rich and got rich on the backs of those they kept poor. The poor got by at the lowest of wages, and the lack of health benefits, and the safety net we now try to save.

We are a nation of over 300 million people, and if we are to survive as a nation we need to do our fair share to ensure the security of it’s citizens. Not everybody has the opportunity and skills to be millionaires. People become millionaires by capitalizing on the vast natural resorces of this country. Let’s not forget that the resources of this country are a birthright of every citizen, not just the privilidged few.

Vote for a Jessy Kelly if you will, but if you aren’t in the privilidged few, then God help you because Kelly won’t.

  6. Maybe Jesse will tell us WHEN and HOW his beloved private health care insurance will provide insurance for the broad spectrum of Americans at the same cost as the government? It is easy to do what they have done in the past, cherry pick the customers and deny coverage to anyone who ever went to a doctor as a bad risk.

Medicare is a factual case of where the Medicare Health Advantage Plan, that 25% of medicare recipents have opted for, is provided as a sop to the PRIVATE insurance companies allowing them to play in the game. Only this gem of a Republican idea costs the U.S. taxpayer $1100/year/recipient or $10 billion dollars above the cost of Medicare provided to the other 75% of recipients and that is when Health and Human Services isn’t providing more money to those insurance companies that can’t make their usal obscene profits. But the Seniors, who went to their presentations to listen to the pitch, got their free lunches.

Privatize Social Security? Not mine. Look at the trillions of dollars of retirement funds lost by Americans after the corrupt PRIVATE financial system of the U.S. hosed them down a few short years ago. Jesse calls it a “Ponzi scheme”. I’ll stick with the Federal government.

Jesse is the classic example of the “Neighboorhood Crank” who is against everything but has no idea of how to fix it.

  7. Jesse Kelly has no clue about what it’s like to have to ‘earn’ anything. What a hypocrit; his ads say he ‘wants to protect seniors’ and yet he spouts such drivel day in and day out. Sure wish I had a daddy who gave me a job and health insurance and everything else. Perhaps if Mr. Kelly had to work for things like the rest of us, he’d change his tune. He won’t get my vote, that’s for sure!

  8. You guys are funny. I went to govt schools in Tucson and everyone one of you would fail Vaud Travis’ High School freshman English class. Ad hominem attacks is not the same thing as logic. Jesse Kelly expressed his Constitutional beliefs and how it opposes the Marxist beliefs of the hand out culture that you wish to ape.

I am not a Jesse Kelly believer. I met him. I like him. He is a veteran and that makes him more of man than most of you sorry sacks will EVER be. His service to the Marine Corps is something he gave to the Nation even weasels like you. There’s a lot of jealousy against Jesse Kelly. You know what I am jealous of Jesse Kelly of? He’s tall. He can run the 2 mile faster than I can. That’s about it. He may have money. I don’t know. You wierdos say he has money but you are mums when Gabby Giff used Papa’s $$ to bankroll her campaigns of intellectual dishonesty and voter fraud.

Like I said, I liked Jonathan Paton, Frank Antenori or Dave Sitton. But Jesse is our guy and he is going to win. Because instead of debating the superiority of your ideas, you are spit venom and make this a popularity contest and let’s be honest Neo-Coms, JK is a pretty girl than Ron Barber.

So start stuffing your ballots now and Ann Rodriguez, you are going to buy yourself a couple of houses with the bribe money the Alinskites have to steal to give to you. This election will not even be close.

  9. I like Jesse Kelly…because he is for making our entire country better by empowering the people and removing big government. Taxes suck, and not getting handouts after receiving them for so long or needing them for whatever valid reason sucks too. But I cannot see, and I am NO expert, any other way to decrease the major issues most Americans deal with other than limiting the power of the government instead of involving them in everything. Screw socialist America…this is a nation founded on great morals and principles and it is about time that someone mentions those…along with God.

  10. We shouldn’t have to worry about healthcare in this country. Period. We have some of the richest citizens in the world, but they’re so greedy that they don’t care about anyone else – like people who want to work but can’t because they are disabled or chronically ill. How are they supposed to get healthcare coverage when they can’t work? They don’t deserve some help? Are you kidding me? It’s sad. But, I know that it will change. Maybe not in my lifetime, but it will change. There will be another revolution sooner or later – we have seen that happen enough in history to know that it will happen again. The current status quo is unsustainable.

James, you’re a typical right wing nutcase. Serving in the military makes someone more of a “man”? Showing your true chauvinistic colors now, aren’t you. I guess women don’t serve in the military in your world. My father was in the military for 30 years. He was an alcoholic, abusive man. I’ve seen what the military can do to people, just as it can create good people, it can create bad. If you consider my father more of a man than me simply because he served in the military, then well, you’re an idiot. I take care of my family. I am a father to my kids. I put myself through college. I do more than simply provide. There are plenty of dishonorable people who join the military because they don’t know what else to do with their lives – then, there are those who want to serve their country. At the bottom of the barrel are those who join the military because they know it will help their political career – they are the worst, because their intent is purely selfish. Just because someone served in the military, they are not sanctified, although you appear dumb enough to be duped into thinking so.

Saying “oh this guy was in the military so he’s got credibility” is as dumb as dismissing the intelligence of others because they have not served in the military.

You’re funny too, because you dismiss ad hominem attacks, and then proceed to call everyone “weasels” and “sorry sacks”. You’re jealous of Jesse Kelly. I simply think he’s wrong, and so are you.

  11. Because the provate sector in this country has been doing so good at providing quality affordable healthcare we should leave it up to the guys who stand to profit the most from someone not getting the care that they need to decide whether they should get it or not. In most other arenas that would be considered a conflict of interest.

And you couldn’t pay me enough to vote for a person who has to resort to using God or Jesus as a stump. That just shows me that first he believes in fairy tales and should be evaluated mentaly, and second that he cannot come up with anything else intelligent or inspiring to say that would make people want to vote for him.

  12. After being a health care professional for almost 40 years, I can say without being reserved, Kelly is an idiot! We have one of the best run, least costly, efficiently coordinated systems in the world! It is called the VA Healthcare System! Folks seem to be too stuck to their Smart phones to Google the information and READ, yes!-READ about the facts. You are not allowed to have your own facts! Opinions-yes! Facts-no!

  13. Who is paying Kelly healthcare, the tax payers. This guys mission is like other Republicans to suppress the American people.

  14. Abie, as someone who receives health care from the VA, you don’t know what you are talking about. One month to get an appointment. 6 months to get a referral to the sleep clinic.

  15. Definitely I completely agreed with the fact that to deliver quality health care service health care organization need to be more effective in their health care providing process. Most probably quality health care service depend upon government interference but without any kind of interfere we have found now days health care organizations are used to rectify their health care errors and applied several types of beneficial concepts to repair the current status of health care system.
