We’ve all had a lot of fun this week with the fact that Seattle is sans breakfast burritos, but it made me realize how lucky we are to have so much killer Mexican food to choose from. Made me feel sort of reborn, actually, and heightened my sense of pride in Tucson’s food scene.
So this morning I found myself looking for a little hole in the wall, an unknown place where I could just dissapear into the landscape and enjoy some homemade food. And boy did I find it.
I had all of La Guelaguetza at 918 W. Prince Road to myself, and didn’t even have to order. The owner came running out and immediately asked if I wanted a breakfast burrito with eggs, potatoes and chorizo. When miraculous things like mind-reading happen, it is wise to stay silent and just nod one’s head. I sat down and waited for my order.
What a sweetheart she was! “You want a little beans, señor?” More nodding. “I’ll put a little chile in it for you.” More nodding. I hadn’t been mothered like this, well, ever, and it felt warm and right and wonderful.
I had to refrain from tearing into the burrito all the way home. Once opened, it was stained a mahogany red from the chorizo grease. All burritos with chorizo should be prepared this way. I decree it.
She charged me $5 and gave me a can of soda for free. I love this town.

I think you met a wise woman, Adam.
Yes, I completely agree with you. The owner of La Guelaguetza is very down to earth, makes you feel welcome, at home and as if she has known you all her life. I sincerely hope that this article gets disseminated to everyone who has not had the opportunity to experience the hospitality of this wonderful lady! She also catered my son’s wedding a few years ago and all everyone talked about was the awesome food she prepared!
I completely agree. I can not express how incredible it feels to be offered such home-style hospitality. Beyond heart-warming. Little things like La Guelaguetza make this city a wonderful place to live.
