- Gabby Giffords and Ron Barber tour the Community Food Bank shortfly before she formally resigned from Congress earler this year.
Gabby Giffords will make a special appearance on behalf of Democrat Ron Barber at a get-out-the-vote concert at downtown’s Rialto Theatre next Saturday, June 9.
Giffords, who stepped down from Congress in January to focus on her recovery from a gunshot wound to the head during a shooting rampage that left six dead and 13 wounded, asked Barber to run for the remainder of her congressional term.
Barber, who is facing Republican Jesse Kelly in the June 12 special election, was Giffords’ district director. He was among those wounded on Jan. 8, 2011, taking bullets in his leg and face.
The concert, a free show designed to reward volunteers and generate voter enthusiasm leading up the June 12 special election, will feature Sergio Mendoza y La Orkesta, along with a special appearance from Joey Burns and Jacob Valenzuela of Calexico, which is one of Giffords’ favorite bands.
It will be Giffords’ first public appearance in Tucson since she stepped down on Jan. 25.
Details on the show, which is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, at the Rialto Theatre, here.

Did anybody with a CAMERA, actually SEE Gabby ask Ron Barber to do anything?? Cause last time I heard – all the things Gabby wanted came from someone elses mouth – chiefly Ron Barber. This is EXACTLY the reason why I wouldnt vote for him. The Wizard of Oz needs to go back to Kansas.
I’m so glad Gabrielle will be in town for the concert. She loves Ron and knows he’s the best candidate for southern Arizona. Thanks for everything Gabby. We love you and your friend Ron!
She never really represented Tucson…She lived in Texas for most of her tenure as a Rep…She needs to go back to Texas where she really wanted to be all along
@GuiseppeKnows, uhhhh, you DO know that Gabby was shot in the head, right? She can barely speak as it is. She’s spoken, like what, twice in front of a camera since she was shot? I don’t think she’s super-comfortable with public speaking right now.
@Brad, PLEASE tell me you’re trolling. She was at a world-class medical center in Texas to recover from her gunshot wound. There aren’t any places in Arizona that could’ve ensured such a speedy recovery, and it’s not like she could have decided herself anyway. And you’re forgetting that she served two whole terms before this happened. So no, she DIDN’T spend most of her tenure in Texas.
@ B.S. Debunker, When Giffords married Mark Kelly in 2007, she moved to Texas. She still maintained a residence here but would spend an average of less than 10 days per month in Tucson, with most of her time being spent in Texas and D.C.. 2007 is a few years before 2011…Reading is fun!
Thank you Brad for setting these fools straight………..
The only fools Brad & Bob see are the reflection in their mirrors.
“Since their wedding in 2007, they have yet to live in the same zip code. While he is based in Houston, she splits her time between Washington D.C. and Tucson.”

“The two began a long-distance friendship. He was in Houston, and she was splitting her time between Tucson and Washington, D.C….The couple were married in November 2007… The couple still live in different cities, but their goal has been to see each other every other weekend.”
