A sample of the sugar-free strawberry Eegees

  • A sample of the sugar-free strawberry Eegee’s

While flavors of the month come and go, the Eegee’s frozen fruit drink has largely stayed the same over the restaurant’s history. Nearly every version of the classic Tucson beverage has the same ingredients: sugar, water and, usually, natural fruit juices (generally, orange, FYI). However, while these drinks are quite delicious, the amount of sugar involved between the fruit and the actual sugar is not insignificant (35 grams in a 12 ounce drink, 130 calories).

So, the idea of a sugar-free Eegee’s is sort of a welcome one. Sweetened with Truvia, the Skinny-Berry Strawberry Eegee’s (which isn’t a zero calorie option, after all, there’s still fruit and fruit juice involved) is still in the testing phase at the moment and not for sale, but when web producer David Mendez and I tried samples earlier this week at the 3250 E. Valencia location, we were generally happy with the results. The regular strawberry is actually a bit too sweet for my tastes (I’m solidly in the lemon camp), so the less-cloying version worked for me. I thought the texture of the sample was a bit more grainy and snow-coneish than usual, but who knows, that could have been due to other factors. As someone who should probably endeavor to ingest as few calories as possible, if my beloved lemon is offered in this format, I’d probably make the switch.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. All I know is I tried the flavor of the month “Jungle Juice”, and was very disappointed that it lacked the horrendous mixture of Everclear/cheap rum, brandy etc., that the Jungle Juice of my high school days contained.

  2. Its about time! And even better its made with a stevia product!! But make lemon with it so we can mix it into vodka. Yum!

  3. I believe a sugar free eegee’s frozen beverage is a lot like a non-alcoholic beer. Useless. The best thing they could do is not to add sugar, just go with the sugar that occurs naturally in the fruit and substitute a low-sugar juice for the higher one they use now.
Mr Gibson mentions that he thinks the regular strawberry flavour is too sweet, to which I concur. The trick is to get a serving of half lemon & half strawberry, the combination is greater than the sum of their parts. They compliment each other very well, rendering the strawberry not overly sweet & the lemon not too tart. This is also a great combination for mixing with the adult beverage of your choice. Whiskeegee’s are what I called mine before I started imbibing neat. Please drink responsibly.

  4. We had the new Skinny Berry Eegee last night and it was very good; actually, we hope that they keep it because we’ve been saying for years that Eegee’s needed to have a sugar-free option. Granted, the original is better, but some Flavor-of-the-Months are too sweet, as are the standard Lemon, Strawberry, and Pina Colada flavors. The sugar-free Eegee is made with Truvia, a natural sweetner, so it’s obviously much healthier than any of the artificial sweeteners (i.e. Sweet ‘N Low, Splenda, Equal, etc.).

A key fact that this article neglected to share is the calorie content of the Skinny Berry Eegee, as stating ‘which isn’t a zero calorie option, after all, there’s still fruit and fruit juice involved,’ immediately makes inquiring minds, like mine, want to know how the calorie count. Unlike the writer of this article, I easily researched it by contacting the Eegee’s Corporate Office, and the good news is that there are ONLY 10 CALORIES PER 8 OZ. SERVING.

PLEASE spread the word about the new sugar-free option because after all these years, those who need sugar-free products for health-related reasons, would love for this to become a standard flavor. Yum! :o)

  5. It contains “sugar alcohol” which is a problem for some people. Also, it is highly acidic, but I like the way it tastes. IF it has sorbitol or mannitol in it, it may upset some stomachs, but I am delighted they finally made an option which contains less sugar. Wish I could find out the whole list of ingredients.

  6. It is fabulous and a great welcome to pre diabetic people and calorie counters.
    It tastes wonderful.

  7. I have type 2 diabetes and I’m trying not to cheat! Please offer sugar free mango or at least one other sugar free flavor. With so many people with diabetes today, It will guarantee increased business.
