It was a strange week around here at the Tucson Weekly offices, partially because of the lingering minor changes and such from the sale, but also the bizarro backlash from our reporting of the drama surrounding two local restaurants. But, hey, let’s stay positive in this space for a week. Here’s a list of five things I like right now.

1. Working on a list of Houston rapper Riff Raff’s nicknames and being able to call it “work” (see page 31).

2. The current season of MTV’s Challenge, subtitled “Free Agents” this time. While not the best edition of the show ever, the intrigue provided by not terribly bright people trying to figure out strategy for a dumb competition show is always entertaining.

3. The song “Call You Out” by British trio JUCE. As far as I can tell, this group has one song, but with a video full of TLC and SWV references, this is exactly the sort of thing I enjoy.

4. Retro Game Show Night, this Saturday night, May 17 at Club Congress. I’m biased as a semi-regular participant in this show, but Tempest DuJour’s monthly tribute to ’70s game shows is about as entertaining as any night in Tucson. This month, the bawdy comedy will be applied to a take on Hollywood Squares.

5. Sour beers. While Tucson brewers aren’t exactly cranking out sour beers quite yet, Tap and Bottle had the New Belgium sour brown ale La Folie on tap last week. It was great and now that’s all I want to drink.

5a. That someone is actually reading this. Thanks.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. Tempest DuJour’s Retro Game Night is a great way to survive summer in Tucson… and have a good time doing it!

  2. Tempest DuJour is a Tucson treasure. Match Game is probably one of my all-time favorite game shows and the fact that Tempest and her panelists keep it as bawdy as Brett Sommers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Betty White, Richard Dawson and the other “regulars” did in the 70s….ah, bliss. 🙂

I have nothing but faith that her version of Hollywood(ish) Squares will be nothing but hilarious. Can’t wait to see how they create the tic-tac-toe structure. 🙂

  3. Was the inside cover of anyone’s paper copy all fudged? There was some red text, but it wasn’t the complete text. Was quite odd. I guess the new publisher isn’t used to printing so many color copies?

  4. The inside cover of my weekly was also a disaster, full of incomplete and nonsensical red text. Is this a test to see if anyone is reading Dan’s weekly musings?

  5. @SonoranWinds – It was sarcasm, it is the first thing I read every week as well.

  6. Dan, sure hope you will comment on the UA’s disastrous commencement ceremony this week.

  7. I’m still a hard-copy reader and saw Page 2 mess as well. Figured it was something 10/13 was introducing….

  8. Please comment on the mess that was the UofA graduation. The administration party line was there were some minor inconveniences. As viewed from the air conditioned VIP reception, it was. As viewed from the horrendous line to move the wheeled chair grandmas up the elevator, it was a mess. As viewed by the students cooped up in the cattle pen with no water, it was a mess. As viewed from the seats in the upper deck, waiting endlessly, in the heat, it was a mess. As viewed on the video screen, for the single file students, who were told to stay in single lines, it was a mess, as the cameras did not stay on the line, but gave random shots throughout the stadium. As viewed by parents and taxpayers, and tuition payers, it was a mess to jam a whole year’s graduation into one huge event, it was a total mess. As viewed by the Tucson business community it had to be a disaster, as all those restaurant dinners, and events were cancelled because of the extreme length of the event. Administration, rethink your whole approach. After all it was just “minor inconvenience”.

  9. @Grad Dad – don’t you understand, graduation has become a marketing event for the new regime to exploit.
