MIA Rocks The Grammys!
Thank the gods for digital-recording devices that allow you to put the wee ones to bed and catch up on shows like the Grammys last Sunday. What’s even better is being able to forward through meaningless dribble, like the lavish display of affection given to Coldplay while Kings of Leon were snubbed (should have let…
Ken Starr: The Attack Man Defending Prop 8
“Fidelity”: Don’t Divorce… from Courage Campaign on Vimeo. Remember Kenneth Starr, the former U.S. Solicitor General who led the legal inquisition of President Bill Clinton, allowing Americans to learn more about cigars and stuff? Fun times. Well, Starr is back leading a new kind of inquisition–this time against gay marriage, specifically marriages in California before…
Casbah Could Close
The Casbah Teahouse may be pulling up stakes after 13 years at 628 N. Fourth Ave. Citing the economy, rising food prices and slowing business due to construction on the Fourth Avenue underpass, the eatery’s owner said she is currently looking for ways to keep the doors open, but will close at the end…
Rio Nuevo Review-O
Attention, downtown boosters: You might want to schedule a trip to the state Capitol on Wednesday. The Senate Finance Committee is set to review Tucson’s Rio Nuevo spending, which is the first step toward eliminating it altogether. The Finance Committee won’t be voting on a bill; instead, they’ll be examining Tucson’s progress with downtown revitalization…
Phelps Slips By Economic Woes: Bring Brownies (edited)
Where is Pima County’s stimulus package? Word on the street is that some folks in Pima County Development Services are getting the ax next Friday the 13th. Great day to always associate with losing your job. While California state employees are being asked to take furloughs, and the UA is contemplating the cost-saving measure, one…

THE STATE OF THE CITY IS REALLY, REALLY SCREWED The city’s civic leaders aren’t going to let a little economic meltdown stop them from enjoying a plate of rubber chicken and an opportunity to network. Mayor Bob Walkup drew the usual full house for his annual State of the City address in a big ballroom…

Forfeit/Fortune, Eric Bachmann’s latest release under his Crooked Fingers moniker, is a musical scrapbook album of sorts, documenting Bachmann’s recent travels and new friends he’s made over recent tours. Forfeit serves as Bachmann’s most remarkable (if not inspired) release since his days as the Archers of Loaf frontman. Not to say the man who brought…

Approximately a minute into album opener/single “Ulysses,” the herky-jerky guitars and dance-floor drum syncopation that make up Franz Ferdinand’s signature style finally appear, but only after uncharacteristic low-end vamping and swirling synthesizers. This mild experimentation, it turns out, is indicative of Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, the band’s enjoyable third album. Nearly four years since the band’s…

Where There’s Smoke, There’s Ire West Limberlost Drive, Jan. 9, 9:19 p.m. A girl retaliated against her nicotine-abusing mother after the mother repeatedly chose smoking over dealing with domestic unpleasantness, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Department report. The mother and her husband–the girl’s stepfather–said they had been “hanging out” at a bar near their…

Once upon a time, rock ‘n’ roll was about sex, drugs and partying. Classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and KISS epitomized this image, while hair-metal bands like Poison and Motley Crue took it to a whole new level. Thanks to the Eagles of Death Metal and their third album, Heart On, sex, drugs and…
