Charter Schools: The Good, The Bad and The Costly
Two recent, lengthy reviews on charter schools are both worth taking a look at. One is a series of articles by the Arizona Republic reporter Craig Harris, who visited seven states to put together a big picture look at the charter school scene. Harris is probably the most even-handed reporter I’ve read on the subject. Most…

Twenty Good Reads
With the year drawing to a close, we asked authors Tom Zoellner, Margaret Regan and Brian Smith along with Tucson Weekly exectuive editor Jim Nintzel to round up their favorite local books of the year.
A Spent Force
Star Wars: The Rise of skywalker is a disastrous, soulless squandering of the goodwill built up by The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
Reel Indie
Movies coming to your local indie theaters.

The new year brings some changes here at Tucson Local Media, the newspaper empire that publishes Tucson Weekly along with our sister newspapers: Explorer, Marana News, Foothills News, Inside Tucson Business and Desert Times.
Spin Cycle
Don’t miss our guide to some of the best albums 2019 had to offer.
Local Sounds
For a comparatively small city, there seems to be art bursting out of every crevice and cactus. Picking my favorite albums to come out of Tucson this year was difficult enough; keeping track of all of them is downright impossible. But inevitably, a handful catch my ear. Here are my favorite music releases to come…

Local Reunion of the year
Three decades ago, the Sidewinders (later Sand Rubies) dropped their major label release Witch Doctor. In November of this year, the band, led by Dave Slutes and Rich Hopkins, returned to the stage to celebrate the breakthrough album’s anniversary.
The Year in Weed
As 2019 goes up in smoke, medical marijuana, CBD and industrial hemp have been blazing in the news. It was a struggle to remember the top five national and state cannabis news stories, but we managed to do it.
Down the Toilet
It feels like we’re gonna have to flush 10, 15 times to get rid of all of this year’s backed-up stupidity. Once again, correspondent Leo W. Banks has read through the news and remembers—hopefully for the last time—the mooks, malcontents and madmen of 2019 before it all swirls away.
Positive Perspective
Tucson’s economic forecast looks strong moving into 2020, and as far as economists are concerned, another recession is not likely in the years to come.
Danehy
Two thousand nineteen was a rather somber year for me, but it was not without its entertainment highlights. As always, these are my favorite things and not in any way judged to be the “The Best.”
Gameday Brew
Yes, Tucson’s bowl game has its own commemorative beer. It comes from the oldest brewery in Arizona, Tucson’s own Barrio Brewing Company, and the selection makes perfect sense now that I know what’s behind a bowl-worthy brew.
