Making a Life in Photography — Rollie McKenna

Through May 16, the Center for Creative Photography is presenting “Making a Life in Photography,” featuring the work of Rosalie “Rollie” Thorne McKenna. The late photographer, 1918 to 2003, graduated from Vassar College in 1940 and worked independently as a sought-after architectural and portrait photographer. Her work has been praised as a unique and underrecognized contribution to American modernism and documentary photography. The gallery is closed on Sundays.

‘Petals and Prickles’

The Tucson Desert Art Museum’s “Petals and Prickles” exhibit showcases botanical art from the desert southwest. Through April 18, the show features a collection of work from 18 artists — each presenting pieces inspired by desert blooms, cacti and other flora in the region. Their work celebrates the rich colors, intricate textures, and dramatic forms found in the Southwest landscape.

‘Urinetown’ — The Musical

Presented by Pima Community College, “Urinetown” is a satirical musical set in a dystopian future where one corporation controls all public toilets and enforces high fees — creating a society where access to basic needs comes at a steep price. The story follows Bobby Strong as he challenges the oppressive UrineGood Company. The production, directed by Maryann Green, explores themes of corporate greed, social injustice and rebellion.

No Frills Dance Happenin’

For over 25 years, ZUZI! Dance has provided a platform for local choreographers, dancers and artists to present their established or experimental work. The No Frills Dance Happenin’ event features youth and adult dancers performing a diverse array of styles. Solo acts, duos, trios and groups consisting of independent artists, schools and other local groups and performers are welcome to participate.

Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is celebrating 50 years of adventure with the Banff World Tour. On its list of stops is The Fox Tucson Theatre, scheduled for Saturday, March 7 to Sunday, March 8. Many of the films in the lineup feature first ascents, whitewater thrills, personal triumphs and impossible journeys — showcasing what it means to push boundaries and live boldly. A portion of the proceeds from every ticket sale benefits local outdoor nonprofit partners, Arizona Trail Association and Western National Parks.

‘Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help’

Katie Forgette’s “Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help” lands at the Invisible Theatre for the venue’s 54th Season. The story follows the O’Shea family — a cash-challenged, Irish-Catholic family trying to get through 1973. 19-year-old Linda O’Shea is the narrator, attempting to re-enact for the audience the most turbulent day of her life — her own personal Saturday Night Massacre, but her family keeps interrupting and insisting on telling their side of the story.

Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival

Presented by the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music, the Winter Chamber Music Festival is a concert series — celebrated for its artistry and curated repertoire. Artistic Co-Directors Peter Rejto and Bernadette Harvey are returning this year for the event’s 33rd season. The program features music from classical composers, including Brahms, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Dvořák, as well as a selection of more contemporary works as well. Concert dates include March 8, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15.

Negative Painting with Gel Prints

The SAAG Gallery at Joesler Village hosts public half-day art activities all month — with each session featuring a different project, using and learning various techniques. For Wednesday, March 11,  Dawn Stanley will host Negative Painting with Gel Prints. Each class will be hosted in SAAG’s new, state of the art classroom.

‘On a Winter’s Night’

On Thursday, March 12, The Fox Tucson Theatre will present the “On a Winter’s Night” reunion tour. The veteran singer-songwriters have been praised as the brightest stars for the past three decades. Among them is Christine Lavin, who gathered the folk and Americana artists group in 1994. Patty Larkin, Cliff Eberhardt, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades, with fond memories of their touring days together.

Vegan Tucson Night Market

The Vegan Tucson Night Market returns at the Heirloom Farmers Market at Rillito Park. 70 purveyors that include 12 new food vendors and the new Wellness Village with over 10 practitioners doing various modalities — from touch therapy to mind and body to sound healing. The Vegan Night Market continues to grow as the seating area has been expanded, new games are added, live music is played and a non-alcoholic bar is added.
