Making a Life in Photography — Rollie McKenna

Through May 16, the Center for Creative Photography is presenting “Making a Life in Photography,” featuring the work of Rosalie “Rollie” Thorne McKenna. The late photographer, 1918 to 2003, graduated from Vassar College in 1940 and worked independently as a sought-after architectural and portrait photographer. Her work has been praised as a unique and underrecognized contribution to American modernism and documentary photography. The gallery is closed on Sundays.

‘Petals and Prickles’

The Tucson Desert Art Museum’s “Petals and Prickles” exhibit showcases botanical art from the desert southwest. Through April 18, the show features a collection of work from 18 artists — each presenting pieces inspired by desert blooms, cacti and other flora in the region. Their work celebrates the rich colors, intricate textures, and dramatic forms found in the Southwest landscape.

Katie Forgette’s “Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help” lands at the Invisible Theatre for the venue’s 54th Season. The story follows the O’Shea family — a cash-challenged Irish-Catholic family trying to get through 1973. The narrator is 19-year-old Linda O’Shea, attempting to re-enact for the audience the most turbulent day of her life — her own personal Saturday Night Massacre, but her family keeps interrupting and insisting on telling their side of the story.

The Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention invites members of the community to the historic Westward Look — originally a 1912 hacienda, located on 80 acres of the Sonoran Desert foothills. The event will feature hand-crafted cocktails by citrus and hummingbird gardens, relaxation time in the pools and hot tubs and view of the saguaros and the Catalina Mountains. Guests can expect a lineup of special guests, entertainers, panels and games. Attendees are not required to wear costumes or specific attire.

Crazy Train — America’s Ozzy Tribute

Crazy Train is a touring Ozzy Osbourne Tribute Show hosted by Vinny Cormier. Vinny is supported by a band full of Berklee drop-outs, including his son Dylan, to deliver the show. This tribute show is packed with special effects. The special effects and the light show provide an appropriate aura of spookiness to complement the show. Crazy Train rolls over all of Ozzy Osbourne’s greatest hits. It is a seated show for attendees with venue doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 7:30 p.m.

Fourth Avenue Spring Street Fair

The Fourth Avenue Spring Street Fair is recognized as one of the premier community celebrations in the southwest. This family friendly event promotes original, hand made art, with around 350 artists around the world. The Fair offers live entertainment, buskers, around 40 food vendors, beer and local 4th Avenue Merchants. This year’s fair includes events like the Community Chalk Art Collaboration, the Euro Trampoline, Pole Impact, and a special appearance from Paradise Parrot Rescue. Free Shuttle Service is provided from the Pennington Street Garage. It is recommended that participants park along the Streetcar line and use Sun Link Streetcar.

Anteater Behind-the-Scenes Experience

Go behind-the-scenes to meet one of the giant anteaters at Reid Park Zoo. Participants will learn about the anteaters’ adaptations, how they are cared for and how the zoo supports conservation efforts in Brazil to protect the species in a 30 minute experience. All participants must be older than five years old and at least one adult must attend. Participants should plan to arrive at the Zoo at least 10 minutes early where the educator will meet the group near the peacock statue in front of the zoo.

‘Inside Out: Men Behind Bars’

Betsy Kruse Craig’s adaptation of “Inside Out: Men Behind Bars” lands at the Invisible Theatre for the venue’s 54th Season. Based on the writings of incarcerated students at The Bureau of Prisons Federal Corrections Institution — the play is based on months-long engaged ethnographic research funded by an Anthropological Research Grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation awarded to Linda Green, an anthropologist at University of Arizona.
