A new TV ad featuring Caren Teves, who son was slain in the Colorado movie theater massacre, hits Sen. Jeff Flake for not supporting the Manchin-Toomey background-check legislation.

Flake responds via Facebook:

If you are anywhere close to a television set in Arizona in the coming days, you’ll likely see an ad about gun control financed by NYC Mayor Bloomberg.

Contrary to the ad, I did vote to strengthen background checks. I voted for the bipartisan Grassley Amendment, which included language from a bill I helped write which strengthened background checks for those with mental illness. The Grassley amendment also included language to increase prosecution of criminals and fugitives who circumvent the current background check system.

Mayor Bloomberg can spend millions trying to get me to support his view of background checks. That’s his call. But we Arizonans aren’t easily bullied. The legislation that would have done the most to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them was the Grassley Amendment. And that’s the amendment I supported.

  1. These are feel good attacks that help Mark Kelly keep his name alive for his politcal future. It’s cheap and theatrical. A back ground check would not have stopped ANY of the mass shootings in the last 10 years. Lets fix the real problems, making it easier for parents, families, judges and police to have others mental health isses checked.. BUT no we dont’t want to do that. Mark Kelly, you are a joke and a walking piece of garbage. Using your wife’s horrible shooting as stepping stone for you. Gutless Mark, pure gutless. You’re a coward Mark, a true political American COWARD.

  2. Sorry to disagree, but Mr. Kelly’s name does not appear in this add. What is clearly stated is that Mr. Flake wrote a reply to this family stating he supports background checks and then broke his word and voted no. I think this makes him the liar.

  3. Had Senator Flake supported the bad idea of a background check as proposed in the deeply flawed Senate Bill, he would have done a great disservice. I, for one, view this ad by the Bloombergs of our country, as proof positive that our senator is doing his job.

Keep the faith Jeff and keep doing what is right for America and Arizona.

  4. We won’t bother “keeping the faith” with Jeff Flake, the most aptly named Senator in a very long time.

  5. Don’t support more gun control, you’re a lair. Lets talk about why background checks have to go through a federally licensed firearm dealer. … Waiting… Still waiting… None, not one reason we, the people should not be allowed to use National Criminal Instant Check System for ourselves. If these checks were such a good idea then why can’t we do them on our own? These lies about not expanding BATFE licensed agents into every sale don’t pass the sniff test. You want sensable debate on gun control, then try making sense, not boondogle bureaucracy.

  6. I’ve seen the ad and I think it says it all, quite well. Flake brought all of this down on himself.

He is early in his term, so I’m sure his party is hoping that it will blow-over well before the next election. If he makes a habit of ‘talking out of both sides of his mouth’ then we will all know that the issue really is his personal integrity. I used to admire John McCain for his integrity, but he sold his soul to the party in return for their aid in advancing his political career. Who knows what he really thinks now. Same for Flake?

  7. Flake voted to let the voices of the Gun control Bill be heard, instead of filibustered. I think that is what we need is both sides speaking the Obama Administration doesn’t do that, Obamacare is the result of Republicans voices being locked out, Flake didn’t do that. After hearing what the Bill stood for and how it was sold Flake voted against the Bill as any person honestly looking for a solution to gun murders should have.

The Gun Bill was sold as being the answer to Sandy Hook to the Denver massacres when in fact that was a lie, the Bill was just more of the same failed laws that has created a situation where Democrat voting areas have 650% HIGHER gun murder rates than the Republican voting areas with less restrictive gun laws. Profiling mental health is the answer, not more gun laws; we already have over 10,000 in place. Jeff Flake took a hit in the polls, why? Because his vote to allow discussion made the Gun supporters mad, as the vote was sold as his supporting the anti-gun crowd, when in fact it was just the anti-gun crowd misleading for por la causa again!

Again how do you explain why Republican voting areas have 650% lower gun murder rates than in the Democrat voting areas all while having LESS gun law? The answer to that question points us in the direction we need to be heading if we indeed want to “solve” these maddening tragedies!
Gun show guns are used in 1.8% of the gun murders; we have been focused on something that even if the Bill was 100% successful could impact only 1.8% of the gun murders! 100% of our efforts directed at solving 1.8% of the problem that is insanity mad dogs just barking for no reason!

I find it shameful how the Democrats and the other supporters of this failed effort used lies and deceptions to sell their position, but lies and deception seems to be how things are done these days right?

    Proud Democrat? Why?

  8. Senator Flake (Fake) can twist it anyway he wants. He’s got high paid writers to respond to these ads…but the truth is he lied. He lied to the people of Arizona and he lied to the mother of that slain son. The Grassley bill never came up for a vote. The real vote was the one 45 senators voted down and each and everyone of them received monetary compensation for their vote. It’s just sickening that these so called politicians would rather work for those that pay them and not the 91% of the American public who supported the bill!!!!
