Google defines the word bacchanal as "an occasion of wild and drunken revelry" (please don't look up what Webster's defines it as), and Borderlands' first ever Bacchanal promises to be just that. With two days of totally free music, art, comedy and, of course, beer (the beer isn't so free), the brand new community event will feature a range of entertainment options on Saturday, April 11 and Sunday, April 12. 

The event kicks off at Borderlands Brewing Co., located at 119 E. Toole Ave., on Saturday at noon where attendees can peruse works of art from a range of Tucson artists. Organizer Ryan Malco says the event is an opportunity for them to showcase pieces from locals who might rarely get the chance to be seen otherwise.

"This community has so many wonderful artists who don't get opportunity to show their work," Malco says. "Borderlands is very happy to offer Tucson's artists a place to be seen by the community."

Included in that work is muralist Joe Pagac's largest piece to date—a new surrealist Sonoran tableau on the building's north wall. After you get a good dose of art-viewing, the comedy and music will kick off at 3 p.m. You can scroll down for the full line-up, but know that Malco says the event was planned intentionally to feature a wide range of acts.

"We wanted to represent Tucson's artist community with broad strokes," Malco explains. "For example, the musical line up for this year is a broad assortment of the different kinds of music being made in Tucson."

He says that includes bands of the folk, ska, rap, pop punk and jam persuasions. 

"It's going to be a strange mix of music but I think that's what going to make it a really fun experience," he says.

On Sunday, artist panels, local films and stand up comedy will keep crowds entertained from 1 until 6 p.m. Although this is the first time Borderlands has hosted the Bacchanal event, the organizers already have plans to grow the event into more of a block party in the future.

"The plan is to keep expanding the event each year until all of Toole is involved," Malco says.
