Larry Wilmore Bringing Extra Nightly-ness to Comedy Central Tonight

Posted By on Mon, Jan 19, 2015 at 9:52 AM

Larry Wilmore is taking over Stephen Colbert's time slot on Comedy Central tonight with his new program, the Nightly Show. Wilmore, who you should recognize as the Daily Show's Senior Black Correspondent, will be the only African-American host on late night TV.

His show, which is premiering on MLK Day, was initially supposed to carry the title the Minority Report, matching his segments on the Daily Show. Wilmore had to change the name, however, because Fox is starting a scripted series with the same title. And while Wilmore is excited to continue the dialogue the Minority Report started in regards  to race, he thinks the new title gives the show a little more room to grow.

From his interview with NPR

"The challenging part about having a show like The Minority Report is that it creates an image in people's minds," he says. "There's a lot of explaining away what the show isn't. And I'd rather explain what a show is rather than what it isn't."

In a world where every other major late night talk show is hosted by a while male, Jon Stewart made news when he suggested a show hosted by Wilmore should replace The Colbert Report. The need for fresh voices in late night was obvious.

But Wilmore says his show's new title also reflects an important idea; that non-white hosts don't have to primarily talk about race.

"I may be talking about Obama's boring budget speech," he says. "So the show's not marginalized where I can only talk about a black thing or the Minority Report thing. And that's Jon's idea — now, I get to talk about that."
As for Colbert, who abdicated the slot to take over the Late Show? We won't see him gracing our screens on a regular basis until September.
