The biggest Election Day surprise may be Republican John Christopher Ackerley's lead over Democratic state Rep. Demion Clinco in the Legislative District 2 race.

Ackerley leads Clinco by 2,160 votes in a district that is 40 percent Democratic, 25 percent Republican and 35 percent independent. But it's also a district that includes Nogales, Green Valley, Sahuarita and Latino precincts on Tucson's south side. While there are votes left to count, it would appear that the Green Valley and Sahuarita voters turned out, while the Democrats did not.

Pima County Democrats had hoped to pick up a House seat by knocking off Republican Ethan Orr in Legislative District 9. Orr has a 65-vote lead over Democrat Randy Friese. If these results hold up as Pima County sorts its way through the nearly 47,000 remaining ballots, instead of gaining a seat, the Dems may have actually lost one.
