It's not about coffee, but an even better treat: free admission to a colorful and uplifting exhibit of videos and installations evoking the personality of water. It's happening at MOCA, Tucson's Museum of Contemporary Art, from noon to 5 p.m., daily through Sunday, March 23.
The exhibit is "Janaina Tschäpe: Floating Worlds" which continues through Saturday, April 27. Here are highlights from MOCA's website:
Floating Worlds is a survey of the artist’s video work from 2000 to 2014. Tschäpe is well known for her work in a wide range of media: large scale drawings, paintings, cut paper relief sculptures, photography and video. Her video work can be found in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the Guggenheim Museum among many other public and private collections, but never before has an exhibiton focused solely on a retrospective view of the video work exclusively.
I'm still floored by how many people I meet who have never visited our showplace contemporary art venue. It's a little out of the way from restaurants and shops, but it's still hard to miss, nestled between St. Augustine Cathedral's north parking lot, the Tucson Police Station and the Tucson Convention Center, and only a couple of blocks from the Tucson Museum of Art, the Children's Museum Tucson and Armory Park.
Precisely, it's in the big white building full of windows that used to be the fire station before the big new one was built just north of the convention center.
What a stroke of luck to be able to re-purpose that structure into an art space! Super-sized tall and wide with ample north light, the converted fire station space is ideal for installations and other large-scale works in two or three dimensions. A smaller gallery off the main hall is right-sized for exhibits of smaller works, including video and photography exhibitions.
That smaller gallery space remains open as exhibits change in the great hall, and vice versa, so there's always something for Tucsonans to see, and admission is free during the changeover, which is happening this week. Take advantage!
