As early ballots are hitting Arizona mailboxes this week, Republican Jonathan Paton has launched another TV ad against Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in the Congressional District 1 race.
The ad is a mashup of talking points that Paton has used throughout his campaign. The first targets Kirkpatrick's support of the Affordable Care Act.
"Kirkpatrick voted for ObamaCare, cutting Medicare by $716 billion," says a voiceover in the video.
The fact-checkers maintain that changes were made to reduce spending in the future.
FactCheck.org explains how these cuts might help extend the lifespan of Medicare's finances with a metaphor caffeine lovers can relate to: "For instance, let’s say someone has a dedicated coffee budget but decides to drop a daily latte habit and instead buy regular coffee. That person’s coffee budget took a big cut in spending, enabling the budget to last longer. Instead of one month of lattes, this java fan can have two months of coffee."
One of these future reductions is payments to hospitals, according to FactCheck.org.
Paton also brought up Kirkpatrick's $100,000 expenditures during her last day in Congress.
"Other than an out-of-context quote, there's nothing new here," Team Kirkpatrick spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said via email. "The $700 billion Medicare lie is one of Paton's old standards, and he's been distorting Ann's record for 10 months. That approach may go over well at Tea Party rallies, but CD1 is a sensible, moderate district and he is out of touch with it."
Though CD 1 encompasses parts of Pima, Coconino and Apache county, among eight others, the ad will run primarily in Phoenix for an unspecified amount of time, said Team Paton spokesman Barrett Marson.
Meanwhile, the Kirkpatrick camp spent the day in a Navajo Nation get-out-the-vote effort and met with her newly formed Navajo Advisory Group.
