Televised sports are best enjoyed with a belly full of meat, alcohol and large portions of things fried in grease. If the sporting action is on numerous giant screens and there are cheap hot wings to be had, all the better.
This seems to be what's going on in the new Station Pub and Grill, which opened recently in the spot at 8235 N. Silverbell Road, which was formerly home to the short-lived Jackson's Grille and Gastropub.
Co-owner Clint Bolin says the interior has been repainted, redesigned and redecorated to give it a more spacious feel, and that there are now 10 large televisions scattered throughout. He and his partner in the business, Amy Pappas, are shooting for a casual restaurant feel by day and a neighborhood pub at night.
The Station is kicking things off right, with .35 cent wings on Wednesdays, $5.99 burger specials on Mondays (you can add a domestic draft for a dollar more) and both happy hour and reverse happy hours on most weekdays. There are also daily specials and live music and other things that go well with drinking, eating and the like.
Bolin says the response from the neighborhood has been great so far, especially regarding the large portions the place dishes out. Call 789-7040, or visit the place on Facebook for more information.

The Tucson Padres managed a late-game comeback to win, 11-10, against the Las Vegas 51s yesterday. The homestand continues tonight with a 7 p.m. game and $1 hot dogs. Tomorrow is Thirsty Thursday, co-sponsored your friends at the Tucson Weekly. You can find details on tickets and promotions here.
Here are details from last night's game, courtesy of the Padres' Tim Hagerty:
The Tucson Padres trailed by six runs in the sixth inning Tuesday and came back to beat the Las Vegas 51s, 11-10. The Padres sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and scored six times, one shy of a season high for runs in an inning. Matt Clark and Yasmani Grandal hit back-to-back home runs in the rally, which also saw an RBI single by Jedd Gyorko and a sacrifice fly from Blake Tekotte. With the score tied in the bottom of the eighth, Gyorko blasted a high solo home run to left field to put the Padres ahead.

Reflecting back, I still remember the days leading up to my first day at the University of Arizona. I was excited for the fresh start post-high school and embarking on another four-year journey. But the typical four years at college isn’t so typical anymore.
The average four-year graduation rate at public universities is 31 percent (53 percent at private schools) according to Jeff Selingo, the editorial director for the Chronicle of Higher Education in an interview on NPR. So that means in a class of 30 thousand students, roughly 9,300 will graduate in four years. So the other 69 percent of students might be facing a bigger pile of debt by taking those extra years to finish school.
At Indiana State University, there’s going to be a new program to help students graduate by offering to cover the costs of their tuition if they need to take a fifth year. The deal sounds too good to be true; and in a way, it can be considered as such.

You might sort of remember Rebecca Black from her smash YouTube hit "Friday" and her successive attempts to turn the mockery of the universe into lasting fame, but now she's taking whatever notoriety she still retains and making an endorsement in the Mexican Presidential race. Seriously. This is actually what's happening.
It may come as a shock to many but Rebecca Black is in fact Latina. As she proudly stated in this mun2 interview, her mother is Mexican. Yet, her cultural heritage may not be as strange or shocking as the political stance that the 14-year-old YouTube singing sensation recently took in Mexico.Black showed her support for PRI presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto in a video posted by his supporters on the web on Monday. Her statements were made during a recent PRI meeting in the state of Morelos.
“I believe that Peña Nieto is going to do a fantastic job,” the teen said with her mother at her side in a room full of young PRI supporters. Black’s mother, Georgina Marquez, translated her words into Spanish, as the singer is not fully proficient in that language.
[...]
But the video by the Mexican-American Rebecca Black was not very well taken by many social media users in Mexico, who wondered how a 14-year-old from California, who does not speak Spanish properly, ended up endorsing a Mexican presidential candidate, and “interfering” in that country’s elections.
“I think this is a bad joke from the PRI,” said Astrid Capon, an entertainment reporter who hosts a videoblog on Youtube.
“This girl is not Mexican, she is not well informed (on the country’s politics) and for the PRI to believe that because she is famous, young people will follow (her views) is almost offensive,” Capon said in her videoblog.

I understand that Baz Luhrmann is the artsy type, but I think this might be just a bit too much of a re-imagination of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel.

I can't pretend to understand what's going on in Illinois with regards to pension reform, so maybe Republican Illinois State Rep. Mike Bost has some reason to be spewing Biblical-level anger towards the (Democratic) Speaker of the House, but frankly, I'm just happy to watch an embarrassing clip from another state's legislative body for once.

As discovered by Reddit user AllenJacoby, Taco Bell is floating the idea of mixing Mountain Dew with orange juice as a breakfast drink. As someone who nearly obsessively drinks Coke Zero nearly all day, I have little room to criticize, but this does seem like a step toward a Brawndo takeover.

Algae builds up on saucers when they are in the shade during afternoon hours or in a full shade location. The absence of water in saucers will also limit mosquito populations on your patio.
Hose out the saucers as often as possible with a jet setting on the hose.
When on irrigation, set the clock to run the pots for a shorter time to get less run off that collects in the saucers. If you are running your pots for five minutes every morning, reduce it by a minute until it seems to reach the point of enough saturation but little run off. If the pots dry out in the afternoon, add another run time after 3pm. In some cases we have set the pots for as little as two minutes three times a day. This is when you are using an Adjustable Emitter on a stake. If you are using inline emitters, the run times will be longer. (10-20 minutes)
Be mindful that the plants are getting enough water – especially any that are in more sun than others. Since annuals’ roots are in the upper 6-8” of soil, that depth of soil needs to be damp.
As the weather changes (sun, heat, wind, etc) the watering needs can change accordingly. If twice a day for less time is too little, you can try moving to three times a day for that length of time.
With pots 20+ inches in diameter and good growth, you will be able to adjust to once a day in the morning. This should then help the saucers to dry out.
Be sure your pots are on pot toes or feet in order to lift them above the saucer for better air circulation, drainage and to keep the water from wicking back up into the pot.

Where this came from, I don't know, but I did thoroughly enjoy last year's reboot of the Muppets franchise, so more of that same sort of thing is certainly welcome.
