Democrat Ron Barber announced this morning that he had raised $641,000 during the second reporting period of the special election to complete Gabby Giffords' congressional term.

That brings Barber's total for the campaign to nearly $1.2 million.

Republican Jesse Kelly has not not yet released a fundraising report.

While the candidates have been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, the race has also been notable for the spending from national players such as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, Citizens United and the House Majority PAC.

Here's the press release from Team Barber:

Ron Barber for Congress filed its finance totals for the second filing period of the special election today, having raised $641,190 from over 8,300 contributions. More than half of the money raised by Barber came from within Arizona. This report brings the number of people who have contributed to Barber's campaign to 9,298.

As of May 23, Barber's campaign had $390,541 on hand. Barber has raised nearly $1.2 million since announcing for Congress on February 9th.

In addition to the strong fundraising numbers, Southern Arizonans from across CD8 have shown up to volunteer to help get Ron elected. To date, over 1,200 individuals have volunteered by calling voters or walking door to door to get Ron's message out. The volunteers have made over 150,000 phone calls to voters in the district.

"There are many ways to invest in a campaign, and we are seeing Southern Arizonans come out in droves to support Ron's plans to rebuild our middle class, protect Social Security and Medicare, and look out for our veterans," said Jessica Schultz of the Barber campaign. "We are seeing people who have never before been involved in politics support Ron's candidacy and reject Jesse Kelly's extreme beliefs, and we are honored to have such widespread support."
