On Thursday, May 10, our illustrious anti-Mexican-American-studies state Attorney General Tom Horne filed a nine-page intervention complaint and 12-page motion to intervene with U.S. District Court Judge David C. Bury, saying that the Unitary Status Plan being developed by the court-appointed special master had better not violate state law.

The Attorney General, on behalf of the State of Arizona (“State”), moves for permission to intervene in this action on a limited basis as a matter of right to ensure that the Special Master’s proposed curricular revisions for in-depth ethnic studies courses in the Unitary Status Plan (“USP”) do not violate state law. The Court is requested to permit the State to intervene under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 24(a)(2), because any implementation of ethnic studies courses by the Tucson Unified School District No. 1 (“TUSD”) pursuant to the USP in violation of state law would unconstitutionally usurp the State’s right to administer its laws. In the alternative, the Court is requested to grant permissive intervention pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 24(b)(1)(B), because the State has a common question of law or fact regarding the proposed ethnic studies courses that may be proposed in the new USP.

One MAS supporter mentioned Horne’s amazing timing of his filing—Mexican Mother’s Day. These Mexican Mother’s Day filings have one goal: to give Horne leverage when it comes to ethnic studies in the Unitary Status Plan.

  1. The FEDS lead the way in divisiveness.. he is only insuring that they dont “kickstart the racism” again , here in Arizona.

  2. Will this make Tom Horne governor? Or will it only attract attention to his unprofessional and unconstitutional (state and federal) conduct as education superintendent and attorney general? The state and federal indictments and charges and disbarments against Andrew Thomas and his ilk, Joe Arpaio and his bully deputies are one part of it. The discriminatory treatment of Mexican-American studies as over against approved studies of African and Asian American instructional units, the longstanding and still unsettled discrimination suit against TUSD. And of course we might also talk again about his punishment for illegal conduct as a “investment advisor”.

  3. TUSD needs to concentrate on reading, writing and arithmetic. Any other “studies” should be for after school AND paid for by the parents, not the taxpayers….

  4. And yet another non biased whiny report from somaone that proablynever set in ontht racist class, that claims tha caucasians “oppress” hispanics.. Yet amazingly enough, these same “oppressed” never mention how they “oppressed” others as well. Yes Ms. Herreras, the class is extremely racist, and should never have been allowed to be taught, but then again riots, chains and pyrotech, is perfectly acceptable behavior for these “students” (had “Anglo” students commited these acts they would have been listed as “hate” crimes and they would have been given no mercy ((suspended, expelled, etc)) . Return to the three “R”s and watch the test scores rise, keep the feigned racism where it belongs, in the toilet.

  5. How can somebody be against an elective Mexican American study program and vote for an elective class on the Christian Bible mandate for every school system in the state.

  6. If you are a legal citizen, you are an AMERICAN…PERIOD! You can be an American with Mexican heritage; an American with Jewish heritage; an American with German heritage, etc. Is it fair to teach one’s heritage and not another? As an American are you true to American traditions, values and above all, the Constitution and the Bills of Rights? If your country of origin is so much greater and worth trampling the American ways, then by all means feel free to return. It’s time AMERICANS—-NO MATTER WHAT COLOR—STAND UP FOR INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM AND STOP WITH THE DIVISIVE, RACIST RHETORIC…AND FYI, “And to the REPUBLIC (NOT DEMOCRACY!) for which it stands, one nation under GOD”…

  7. RE: GW Wooldridge, “How can somebody be against an elective Mexican American study program and vote for an elective class on the Christian Bible mandate for every school system in the state.” The class was not being taught as an elective, but as an accredited class in place of the requirement for classes on State and/or (US) Federal Government. It has been established that a great portion of the syllabus declared that, “the brown-man was/is being oppressed by (all) whites, that the legal system (and the enforcers of same) are tools and lackeys of the whites and that all the land (what is now pretty much all of the area west of the Mississippi and south of the Canadian border) is not part of the US, because it was stolen from the Hispanic claimants and demands return of same.” TUSD would have made the classes electives but, the “oppressed” demanded that the classes be credited or nothing; they got their wish. The “Christian Bible mandate” is supposed to be elective class(es) on the Christian-Judea influences pertaining to the basic instruments, i.e. the constitution, laws, and the social practices, etc., of the collective peoples of the US (past and present). It would behoove the school board to check the syllabus in this instance also.

  8. The place where such freedoms, to study ones heritage, to state the rhetoric of choice be it pro or con, were born on the lives of those who fought in the wars and made the sacrifice to assure the continued tradition of every Americans right to the pursuit of life liberty and happiness.
Therefore, it is my opinion that NO anti American teachings of any form should be taught in any school which resides within the borders of the country which those very freedoms were paid for with such a high price, ever.

The Mexican American studies of TUSD were openly anti American and therefore should never ever be allowed in any form.

  9. So what? I don’t care, why do you care so much? I suppose if you’re Chicanos it would matter to you. But I do suspect there may be a racist agenda in some of those studies, don’t you? Make them study the same subjects all the other non-Mexican-American students study and if they want learn more about their culture and history, why maybe there should be a class that’s open to ALL students that might be interested in that subject. I don’t want my property tax dollars going to fund classes that aren’t available to all students in the system, that seems like discrimination to me. Viva Amerika!

  10. Ms. Herreras’s activism has gone way past being merely tiresome. Maybe she could help her readers to understand critical race theory (CRT), whichI believe is a foundational concept for Mexican-American Studies as it was being taught to high school students at TUSD. From what I can see, CRT is an absurdly cynical concept that is being promoted by demagogues in the black and Hispanic communities. I don’t believe this type of thinking could survive close inspection and public debate.

Here’s an explanation of CRT from a conservative writer:

Would Ms. Herreras like to explain CRT?

  11. I still want to know if Tom Horne is the bounty hunter depicted in the movies???……

  12. La raza is an Anti- American organization. Have any of you actually read or heard what is being taught in Mex-American studies? One thing they teach is that AZ and Cali rightfully belong to Mexico.

  13. All the mexican studies i need can be done in front of a big ass plate of puerco chili verde

  14. Also, the only mexican american studies I need is the study of salma hayek dance scene in From Dusk Til Dawn…. ay dios mio!

  15. I watched the “La Raza” documentary on Independent Lens on PBS yesterday. It changed my attitude regarding La Raza. It seems to help Chicano kids develop self-esteem. It also keeps them in school.

  16. I generally have no problem with Mexican-American ethnic studies that are intended to increase a student’s self-respect and awareness of their culture. The people who advocate these studies at TUSD are, however, their own worse enemy.

I saw a video production this weekend that showed the “Brown Berets” marching around in uniforms and combat boots. This type of street theater is completely unproductive and does nothing but encourage Tom Horne and others in their goal to eliminate TUSD’s Mexican-American studies program.

  17. Why is he so Evil, just because he doesn’t want Ethnic studies, Caucasians have to deal with the fact that they aren’t always going to be on top. Were all Human Being why all the Hatred. Outside of this crazy planet were just a floating ball in space. Why cant we all just be free! And btw AZ and CA used to be Mexicos Land! So uhmmm yea…. The least Tom Horne can do is bring back Ethnic Studies.

  18. The REAL fact is MAS classes are OPEN every demographical segment of the high school student. The REAL FACT is that Americans of Mexican desent born in this area are 75 to 85% INDIGENOUS and the Constitution of the United States of America guarantees every American citizen have the right to learn and read about History: the GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY. Those who are ignorant of History are doomed to repeat it. Heaven forbid! I’m am sure the Federal Courts will agree; and the kids will be back to reading and learning all of it, and I repeat all of it. That’s what AMERICA (spell it correctly) is about, FREEDOM, and that includes the right to read, learn and think critically and analytically of American History.
