What to Listen to This Week: Friday Edition

Posted By on Fri, Dec 2, 2011 at 4:30 PM

Four songs for your weekend enjoyment selected with care by our music writers, this time featuring Van Morrison, Chinese Man, Saviours, and Dr. Dog.

Jarret Keene
Van Morrison, "Dweller on the Threshold"

Day after Thanksgiving, I was feeling blue, trapped in Colorado for reasons I stubbornly couldn't, wouldn't, accept. I walked into a Barnes & Noble in Littleton, where I paid seven bucks for Van Morrison's 1982 album Beautiful Vision. Four years ago, Rolling Stone magazine slagged it as the artist's worst record. Not even close. I stepped into the parking lot, looked out into the distance, and Columbine High School stared back at me. This incredible song from Beautiful Vision, "Dweller on the Threshold," got me through the long drive back home. Here's a live version from German TV. Van is the Man, a magician of sound. Thank God for his music.

Carl Hanni
Chinese Man, "Miss Chang"

I met a cool French couple on Thanksgiving and they turned me on to this.

Brian Mock
Saviours, "Heathen Eye" (Live)

I'm pretty sure this counts as New Wave of British Heavy Metal (Think: Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Saxon, Motorhead, etc.), or NWOBHM as headbangers call it. But this being 2011, maybe they are the new, new wave? In any case, anyone lucky enough to catch these guys open for High On Fire at Plush a few years back knows what I mean. Dig the dueling guitars. Heavy, melodic, and to the point.

Eric Swedlund
Dr. Dog, "That Old Black Hole"

Philadelphia's Dr. Dog (with Tucson's Dimitri Manos of Golden Boots now a permanent member) recorded one of the best albums of recent years in 2010's Shame Shame. The band's follow-up, Be The Void, is out in February and definitely one of 2012's most anticipated albums. This week, the band released a video for Be The Void's first single, "That Old Black Hole" and it's awesome.
