Seth Gordon: Please Don't Screw Up "King of Kong"

Posted By on Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 3:15 PM

Ever since the documentary King of Kong was released, the idea that the movie would be remade in some sort of fictionalized way has been floating around. Johnny Depp was rumored to want to play Donkey Kong champ/hot sauce magnate Billy Mitchell. It's not like the documentary version was wildly overexposed or anything, so the remake could take a great story and add a little bit of Hollywood to it. While most remakes are based on terrible ideas, this didn't seem so offensive.

However, director Seth Gordon moved on other projects, including Horrible Bosses which opened this weekend, so the new King of Kong moved to the backburner. However, now Gordon is saying the remake might be back, but in "mockumentary" form:

While there has been speculation about where the story may go—at one point it was rumored that it might be a sequel instead of a straight dramatization of the original film—for the style of the film, Gordon has been inspired by the hit shows he’s worked on.

“There’s a few different avenues [the film can take]. I’ve done some work on ‘Modern Family’ and ‘The Office’ and have worked in this doc style, and so that inspired me to say, instead of doing a traditional narrative feature script, what if we did the remake in the doc style?,” he explained. “What doors what that open? What opportunities? What additional story could we tell? And that’s essentially the approach we took.”

Well, Seth Gordon, I'd suspect the documentary style would end up creating a movie that would nearly the SAME MOVIE YOU ALREADY MADE. If there are "a few different avenues" that you can take, it might be worth pursuing one of the avenues you haven't already been down. Just make a movie about the life of Billy Mitchell. Make a fictionalized version of what happens after the end of the documentary. Remake it as a musical. Anything but another entertainment product shot documentary-style. I think we've all had enough, right?
