Pima County Democratic Party Endorses Mayoral Candidate Rothschild. Plus: Expect a Legal Challenge to Darcy's Signatures

We goofed slightly in our report on Democratic candidate Marshall Home's lawsuit to knock fellow Democrat Jonathan Rothschild off the ballot when we suggested that Rothschild had been endorsed by the Pima County Executive Committee.

While the Pima County Executive Committee did take the rare step of endorsing the incumbents on the Tucson City Council earlier in the campaign cycle, it did not endorse Rothschild.

But that changed last night, when the Executive Committee—a group of precinct leaders inside the party—did vote to endorse Rothschild. The vote was unanimous, with two members abstaining, according to Adam Kinsey, executive director of the Pima County Democratic Party.

"We probably wouldn’t have had the lawsuit not happened," says Kinsey, who expects that Home will soon be kicked off the ballot because he was registered to vote outside the city limits last year and doesn't meet the city's required residency standards.

"We don’t really acknowledge Marshall Home’s status as a candidate," Kinsey says.

One reason for that: As a "remedy" to the damages that Home is seeking in his lawsuit, he wants the Pima County Democratic Party decertified and $1 million in damages.

In other mayoral-campaign news: Kinsey says a review of independent mayoral candidate Pat Darcy's signatures show enough invalid ones to merit a court challenge to knock him from the ballot. Kinsey says party members also plan to challenge Republican mayoral candidate Shaun McClusky's signatures.

If all the challenges are successful, only the Green Party will have a primary this year. So if you're an independent voter, you might want to order a Green Party ballot for the primary.

Note: This story has been updated to note that two members of the Pima County Democratic Party Executive Committee abstained from voting on Rothschild's endorsement.
