From the Phoenix New Times:

Senate sources confirm to New Times that Republicans voted to remove Bundgaard from his leadership spot over last month's scuffle with the senator's now-ex-gal-pal, Aubry Ballard, on the side of a Phoenix freeway.

Last week, the Senate Republican caucus agreed to give Bundgaard a week to present them with "new evidence" supporting his version of what happened during the scuffle, which he claims included Ballard pulling out a gun before he removed her from his car. Several of Bundgaard's colleagues questioned the tale of the gun because there was no mention of it in the police report.

Senate Republicans, sources say, told Bundgaard that if Ballard pulled a gun, her fingerprints would be on it. That said, the only "new evidence" Bundgaard's produced so far are the results of a lie-detector test, which he passed.

As we noted last week, Bundgaard's efforts to sway his colleagues was a lost cause. Senate sources told New Times the votes to give him the boot already were in place, and the caucus was more or less playing along.

Even though it appears to have been a waste of time, Bundgaard told New Times last week that he was "grateful that they let me have a week to get them more concrete information."

It's unclear at the moment who will take over for Bundgaard as majority leader.
