With memorial and scholarship funds popping up left and right following the Jan. 8 shooting, Pima Community College has decided to join in.
The Pima Community College Foundation has established a scholarship fund in memory of those who died in the shooting, with a special emphasis on shooting victim Gabe Zimmerman, an aide to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, says Cheryl House, executive director of the foundation.
Although she declined to give an exact figure, House says the fund has collected "less than $1,000" in donations so far.
That number should rise dramatically on June 11, when the foundation will hold its 20th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. All proceeds from this year's tournament will go toward the fund. House says the tournament usually raises about $25,000.
The scholarship is targeting students who plan to build careers in public and community service. The amount of students who will receive a scholarship from the fund will depend on how much money is collected, House says.
"We're trying to make something positive that will impact students for years to come," she says.
