Post-Tragedy Funds Continue to Bring in Donations

Thousands of dollars in donations keep rolling in to local charities and memorial funds in the aftermath of the Jan. 8 Safeway shootings.

The Gabriel Zimmerman Scholarship Fund is approaching $20,000 in donations, almost doubling its total going into last weekend, said fund co-creator Jonathan Klein, a San Francisco attorney and, like Zimmerman, a University of California at Santa Cruz alum.

Klein is currently trying to close a deal with a business to match the donation amount, which would bring the fund that much closer to the $50,000 needed for an endowment, he said.

"It's been quite a journey for us," Klein said.

The Tucson Community Food Bank has collected more than $92,000 in donations that have been made in Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' name, up from $75,000 on Jan. 18, said Jack Parris, the Food Bank's public relations manager.

The Community Food Bank is setting aside the donations and will allow Giffords and husband Mark Kelly to decide how best to distribute the money.

The American Red Cross' Southern Arizona Chapter has received $53,000 in donations made in Giffords' name, a number that continues to steadily climb, said Jennifer Tersigni, chief development officer for the chapter.
