Giffords Update: Respirator Removed; Feeding Tube Inserted

Posted By on Sat, Jan 15, 2011 at 2:11 PM

Today's update from University Medical Center:

UMC continues to care for victims of the tragic shooting a week ago. One patient has been discharged today, two patients remain in good condition.

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords remains in critical condition. Her recovery continues as planned.

A surgical procedure (tracheotomy) was performed this morning on the Congresswoman to replace the breathing tube that ran down her throat with a tracheotomy tube in her windpipe, protecting her airway and freeing her from the ventilator. Surgeons also inserted a feeding tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy [PEG]) to provide nutritional support. These procedures are not uncommon among brain-injured patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

A media briefing to provide a full update on patients’ conditions is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17 at Kiewit Auditorium, Arizona Cancer Center, 1515 N. Campbell Ave.
