U.S. Senate Race: Dougherty Sets Out on Walkabout

Posted By on Thu, Aug 19, 2010 at 12:18 PM

Investigative reporter John Dougherty, who is one of four Democrats competing for the chance to run for U.S. Sen. John McCain's seat in November, is going on walkabout through Sunday.

Here's the press release:

John Dougherty, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, Thursday takes his campaign to the streets as part of his climate-defying “Taking the Heat Tour.”

Featuring the “Main Street Express” — which consists of John and his hiking gear backed up by his customized 1978 Bluebird bus, the Strayhound — the trek will start at 7 a.m. Thursday Aug. 19 at the entrance to Lost Dutchman State Park (at Highway 88 & Apache Trail).

The Main Street Express will proceed through Apache Junction down Main Street, and west to Mesa and Tempe along Apache Boulevard, culminating Sunday Aug. 22 in Phoenix.

Dougherty plans to walk 10 miles a day, meeting voters along the way. He will send out frequent

Tweets updating his location, and

will post videos throughout the hike as he addresses the most important issues facing the state and the nation.

“I’m eager to start walking and talking with Arizonans and continue listening to what’s on their minds,” Dougherty said.

Campaign volunteers will help Dougherty pass out flyers and t-shirts and he will answer voters’ questions along the way.

Supporters can pledge dollar amounts per mile to back the campaign. Contributions and pledges can be made at our contribute button at

The “Taking the Heat Tour” will culminate with a celebration and rally on Sunday at a Phoenix park to be announced.

“This is a rare opportunity for voters to talk in depth with a candidate for the U.S. Senate,” Dougherty said. “Please come and join the tour!”
