Cypress Who? Verbobala to the Rescue

Border Remixeado: La Viejita de Sonora from Verbobala Spoken Video on Vimeo.

In this week's issue of the Weekly, Stephen Seigel wrote a great Soundbites about Cypress Hill's decision to cancel their Tucson show, noting the Rialto's Curtis McCrary's open letter to the band asking them to reconsider and use their show to send a message to Brew and crew. (For more, check out this coming week's Guest Commentary.)

Well, the Rialto has found an appropriate replacement in Mexico City- and Tucson-based Verbobala, a video and spoken-word performance-art group that makes a life interpreting border politics. The May 21 show, RISE UP and DANCE TODOS SOMOS ARIZONA, will also feature Salvador Duran and Shaun Harris, a Tucson Hip-Hop artist who placed first in the 2009 TAMMIES Hip-Hop category. Verbobala will perform their spoken-video piece "Border Remixeado" and hold a sonidero dance party to shake off those bad SB 1070 vibes.

From the press release:

Cypress Hill canceled their concert at the Rialto for Friday 5/21 in opposition to SB 1070. So it’s time to RISE UP & DANCE, showing the world that not all of Arizona agrees with that law and others of its type. Bilingual political theater, hip-hop, special speakers & a blowout dance party. All of it a fundraiser for Derechos Humanos Arizona, an organization working everyday to protect the civil rights of those who need it most.

The show starts at 8 p.m., is all ages, and admission is a suggested donation at the door of $5 for students and $7 for everyone else. (If you want to spread the love that night, the Mission Creeps are having a CD-release show at Plush, at Fourth Avenue and Sixth Street, with the Creamys and Modeens. Show starts at 9:30 p.m., but the Creeps go on at 11:30 p.m.)
