Cunningham Appointed to Tucson City Council

Posted By on Tue, May 4, 2010 at 9:08 PM

Tucson City Council's Ward 2 seat—which has been vacant since early April when former Vice Mayor Rodney Glassman announced his run in the 2010 senate race— was filled tonight after the council voted 6-0 to appoint democrat Paul Arthur Cunningham.

Cunningham, 36, has worked for the Pima County Juvenile Court for more than 12 years and also served in the National Guard.

More than 10 candidates applied for the position initially, but in the end council member Regina Romero nominated Cunningham and her fellow council members followed suit.

"I do agree in reviewing the materials that Paul Cunningham offers continuity in the seat and also a real commitment and energy that I think the community wanted," council member Karin Uhlich said.

Cunningham, who is the son of former state lawmaker and Napolitano budget maven George Cunningham, had praise for his predecessor.

"Well, a lot of heavy lifting on the budget is done... I'm kind of getting lucky," he said. "Rodney did all the work, so I get to just try to do my best to be a caretaker for his job, and hopefully I do a good job."
