Federal Judge Susan Bolton has ruled to block some controversial sections of SB 1070, which is scheduled to go into effect tomorrow.

Read about it here. Feel free to leave any thoughts concerning this development in the comments section below.

Update: Howie Fischer up at Capitol Media Services reports the following sections have been blocked:

• Requiring a police officer to make a reasonable attempt to check the immigration status of those they have stopped.

• Making it a violation of Arizona law for anyone not a citizen to fail to carry documenation.

• Creating a new state crime for trying to secure work while not a legal resident.

• Allowing police to make warrantless arrests if there is a belief the person has committed an offense that allows them to be removed from the United States.

Update: Here’s a PDF of the ruling.

Consider it a little light reading.

  1. Doesn’t seem odd…that one of the largest defense contractors for the United States Gov’t, not to mention the boneyard, Air Force bases, etc…are housed in the busiest illegal immigration corridor in the country? But hey, who’s paying for all that extra health care…the Feds…oh wait…it Arizonans. Americans are the worst hypocrites.

  2. Red Star noticed some discussion on NPR this morning (post injunction) on SB 1070 and the point was made that law and politics are difficult, perhaps impossible, to disentangle in these situations. In that vein here is Nicole Allan’s “Jan Brewer: Fleeting Celebrity or Here to Stay? ” in The Atlantic Monthly online at:
