Bernie Sanders will be talking about income equality, climate change, single-payer health insurance, free college education and the like when he appears at 7 p.m. tonight at Reid Park. The crowd will be big so get there early. Doors open at 6 and Sanders will be speaking at the DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center.

In case you missed it earlier this year, here’s a lengthy piece I wrote about Sanders’ visit to Phoenix during this summer’s NetRoots conference. It gives you some idea of what you can expect tonight:

On the stump, Sanders makes it clear that he’s ready to raise taxes on the rich to pay for his many proposals, including universal preschool, free college tuition and a government-run, single-payer healthcare system. “We have a message tonight to the billionaire class,” he thundered in his Phoenix speech, “and that message is: You cannot have it all!”

He’s a ferocious critic of what he calls a “grotesque level of income inequality.” He ties his complaints about the rich to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision and the utter disgust many have with the ever-escalating cost of political campaigns driven by corporate campaign spending and dark money. He cites the Koch brothers’ reported plan to spend almost a billion dollars in the 2016 election cycle: “When one family spends more than either of the two major political parties, that’s not democracy,” he said in Phoenix. “That is oligarchy!”

  1. “grotesque level of income inequality.” Yet makes 6 figure salary and spent tax payers dollars on his tour around America. “Greed is what’s wrong with America…Now give me 90% of your income.” Lol
Stop wasting our tax dollars socialist keep walking. You can disagree all you want. Come election time Bernie Sanders will not be president and will fade away

  2. Bernie Sanders Fights to Raise Minimum Wage to $15!

“There is no justice in America when the largest low-wage employer is not McDonald’s, it is not Burger King, it is not Walmart. It is the United States government,” Sanders said, as he voiced support for a $15 minimum wage. “There is no justice when millions of people throughout our country, including people working in the United States Senate, are working for wages that are too little to take care of their kids, to take care of their family. That’s wrong, that has got to change,” Sanders said. “The real, inflation-adjusted, value of the federal minimum wage has fallen dramatically over time. The real value of the federal minimum wage peaked in 1968 at 10.85 an hour, 50 percent above the current level. Moreover, since 1968, average U.S. labor productivity has risen by roughly 140 percent. This means that, if the federal minimum wage had risen in step with both inflation and average labor productivity since 1968, the federal minimum wage today would be $26.00 an hour,” he said.

  3. Same old song and dance we have heard before. Taxpayer pays with hight taxes. Nothing is ever ‘free’ and why do they think corporations and rich people have moved their money to other countries. How many of these rich democrats like Bernie, The Clintons, Pelosi, Reid, Feinstein and on and on going to give up some of their millions for his cause?

  4. Folks we have reached our debt limit. No country in their right mind would loan the US money. $19T in debt and no jobs produced except for debt increasing government jobs, with over promised and under funded pension plans. Americans have sold their souls to the man.

“Something for free” is simply stealing from others.

  5. To truly appreciate bernies bold ideas one must first learn how the corporate machine works. One must understand what a superpac is and how it is corrupting the candidates. Basically a corporation in multi millionaire can give as much money as they want to the candidate for their campaign. A major issue is that The way the law reads is that the candidate can do anything they want with the money and oftentimes keep millions after the election. Now if you don’t think someone like the industrial giants, the koch brothers who plan to donate 900 million dollars to their pick for president influences the candidates decisions once in office you are naive. You people that watch the mainstream media propaganda as your main source of news have been brainwashed. Did you know that 6 people own over 95% media in our country?? The billionaires that pick the agendas for fox news and many other mainstream media outlets are winning because you guys need to wake up. They use fear to scare you into obeying their way. They seldom focus on real issues and instead on what someone’s hair looks like or other extremely idiotic talking points. Back 20 years ago their was no other choice but to watch what’s on the tv. Now you can dig a little deeper and find out the truth easier than ever before. I suggest you have a more open mind and look elsewhere for the truth. If you want to know the superpac and the misleading citizens united in laymens terms just go to YouTube and type in Colbert tpp. Him and John Stewart make a comedic sketch of the insanity that our bought supreme court paid for. Do you people understand that company’s making record profits are taking jobs from America and sending them to China to feed their ceos and upper echiolon employees greed because of the insanely corporate favored trade laws? This country is worth doing some real research over. I am nauseated by some of the comments I see from people on every candidates media attention. People need to turn off the reality tv and pay attention to the real world again!

  6. Dear Bernie,

Stop we have failed at our idiotic attempt of for the people but ultimately a false control over the population. You are wasting your time. Learn from our mistakes were we left our countries in ruin still today.

  7. The rich hate ‘free money’ and welfare so much, let them walk it like they talk it. End corporate welfare. Spend less on DOD contracts and grants that fund the military industrial complex and PMCs and schools (translation Raytheon and CACI and the u of a). Prison time for screw ups like Pfizer, GM, and aggressively prosecute malpractice without limits how much they have to pay. Prosecute war crimes. Prosecute corruption. End outsourcing. Keep American companies in America and end the silly bs about moving headquarters out of the country and tax evasion and insider trading in congress.

Deregulation is code for grab your ankles.

    America is getting screwed.

  8. Gwenyth Larsen and “Wake up people” rule! All the other posts here (minus this one of course) are horseshit. A lot of people talking loud and saying nothing. A thread where Rat T (or rat t or Rat t or rat T or…whatever) shows up three different times, but of course only makes two different comments, proves my point. Get a clue you know nothings.

  9. Gwenyth Larsen, Wake up People and AZ/DC get ready to wipe your tears for your FAILED attempts come election time.

  10. Gwenyth Larsen, I think you have some decent proposals for future America. Nobody can stop outsourcing without regulatory enforcement – I even agree with Trump here, although he may change his mind later. Kill all government power down to the quick and then we are all on our own: watching out for what we eat and drink, what we buy, how we invest, and how we get screwed by criminals in white shirts, blue shirts and all manner of international attire out there in that new global jungle.
