After a day off for Thanksgiving … the Tucson Police Department’s photo-radar van will be in the following areas (near the town’s two biggest shopping areas, interestingly enough) on Friday, Nov. 23:
- 9 to 2 p.m.: On Oracle Road near Wetmore Road
- 2:30 to 7 p.m.: On Wilmot Road near 22nd Street
This article appears in Nov 22-28, 2007.

Is photo radar really anything more than a way for local governments to generate extra revenue. Shouldn’t these counties and cities be hiring living Police Officers to protect us from criminals instead of spending money in order to make more money for the jurisdiction under the pretense of trying to slow a few overzealous drivers down? If that really worked then photo radar would make itself obsolete in now time at all. But is doesn’t because it does not slow speeders down.
Tucson in particular is highly guilty of keeping speeds artificially low. I have never lived anywhere where speeds are kept at such inefficient levels. This appears to be a directly related to generating revenue for the city instead of creating an environment conducive to the most efficient movement of traffic in favor of commuters.
In a city where planners have never stepped up to the plate and actually planned for growth or the smooth movement of traffic through a city with NO choices besides very slow surface streets it is plainly and simply a grab at the wallet of the general citizenry which wastes OUR money. Photo radar does however generates revenue for a government that is not doing it’s job well. Doesn’t it seem like there is something wrong with this (photo radar) picture?
Michael Mutschler (#1) You make good points and mix in an irrelevant point. It’s difficult to think of Tucson/Pima County with all its size, past mistakes, and sheer complexity as nothing more than a simple stereotypical speedtrap. Could it be that the municipal officials are driven down to the point that they are left with no other tool than to say, “Well, okay, bad boy go stand in the corner for a while and/or give us money…maybe that will work on you”
