Jon Jost & Ralph White: American Transcendence. If you like America and you like experimental art (and, let’s face it, you’re in Tucson so of course you do), head over to Exploded View Gallery/Microcinema for a night of outsider music and film. First, fiddler/singer/banjo-er Ralph White starts the evening with his soundscapes. Then, a screening of Jon Jost’s avant-garde cinema. This is the place to be to get your mind blown wide open. Look & See. “Don’t own so much clutter that you will be relieved to see your house catch fire,” says Wendell Berry. But for a man against clutter, he sure has done a lot to adorn his name: conservationist, farmer, essayist, novelist, professor, poet. Take a cinematic look at one of America’s greatest living writers with this documentary. The showing will be at The Sea of Glass—Center For The Arts.

Monsieur Mayonnaise. A mish-mash of animation, interview, and experimentation, this film tells the story of the comic books filmmaker Philippe Mora made in his youth. It’s also a story about his father’s role in WWII and his mother’s miraculous escape en route to Auschwitz. And, somewhere in there, a man named Monsieur Mayonnaise. This showing is a part of the Tucson International Jewish Film Festival. 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. Tucson Jewish Community Center, 3800 E River Road. $9.
The Loft Cinema
Ninja Terminator. What other two words do you need in a movie title? For Mondo Monday, the Loft is letting you in on one of the rarest spectacles in cinema: a ninja vs ninja vs ninja battle. It’s everything a crappy action movie should be: it’s sloppy, it’s over-the-top and it’s fun. What will survive? Probably not your respect for the director. 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22.
