Guacamole is important to me. So important, it seems, that when someone saw the Best Guacamole section on their Best of Tucson® ballot, he put my name down*.
But, I’m not going to make guacamole for you, dear Tucson Weekly/The Range reader. That would be weird. Know what else is weird? That there doesn’t seem to be a frontrunner in this Best of Tucson® category. I mean, I get it. We’re lucky to have a lot of guacamole options. So many options! But where is it best? Where do you take your sad, midwestern relatives to show Tucson off? We need to know.
So, go vote! If you feel strongly, take all of your friends to your guacamole holy place, buy them a few bowls and convince them to second your vote.
Just in case my many, many links to the survey didn’t clue you in: commenting on this post doesn’t count as a vote, you have to fill out (at least!) 30 sections on our ballot to officially have a say. You can, however, make a case for your favorite guacaloving institution below and help shape impressionable minds.
* I’d like to thank my Nana for teaching me how to cook and my boyfriend for voting for me when he didn’t know what else to put. I shall celebrate this honor in the traditional manner: by eating 12 avocados by myself in under 3 minutes.

I wish I knew of a good place to get guac around here. I make my own and many people have told me it is the best they have had.
I haven’t had any BAD guac, it’s just that I haven’t had any that stands out. Maybe they still use my recipe at the Ironwood at the ASDM, I wrote it down in their cookbook 15 years ago…
Guadalajara Grill. Hands down.
No Tucson restaurant, in my experience (which includes the Guadalajara Grill), makes guacamole as well as it is made in New Mexico. If you really want good guacamole try a restaurant like La Posta in Mesilla or the Church Street Restaurant in Albuquerque. I’ve also had wonderful guacamole at a restaurant in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Of course, I can make it myself at home that is just as good as any of these restaurants!
Guacamole aside, getting voted “the best of” sometimes doesn’t have a whole lot of effect. If you go to Eegee’s, you’ll see on the recent paper tray liners, that we voted “Orange Dream” to be their best slush flavor, and yet, it’s only available ONCE A YEAR!!! Imagine that – the flavor we voted their best, they choose to only make available once a year. I’d call that shooting oneself in the foot, to say the very least! Apparently, next month, Orange Dream is the ‘flavor of the month’. It ought to be one of their standard flavors, always available. DO YOU HEAR ME EEGEE’S?????
Poco & Mom’s make the best New Mexico guacamole anywhere. Go, try it, convince yourself. You won’t regret it. And if you are longing for any New Mexico type cuisine, they’ve got you covered, from Hatch green chile sauce to their amazing red pork, and flat layered enchiladas packed with green chile and chicken. Delicious!
Oh and for Eegee’s rotating flavor of the month, doesn’t it make you love it more, when it’s finally time to have it again? I think watermelon Eegee’s is one of the things that makes July bearable in the Old Pueblo. It’s one of the few things I can look forward to in Tucson in July.
