Not too much on the news front today, but the first half of Caliente is full of local content…just close it when you get to the Cowboys and Aliens feature and you should be fine. The real question is if there will be another giraffe story tomorrow. They’re on quite a run with those.

Section A: 6 Star articles; 22 non-Star pieces
Sports: 4 Star articles; 3 non-Star
Caliente: 10 Star articles; 5 non-Star

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. But one of the main Caliente features was written by one of the reporters shown the door.

  2. @Downtowner: They probably made the reporter turn in the story before they dropped the boom.

  3. I think Downtowner just meant that the byline count could be a bit inflated because it still includes the work of some people who aren’t there anymore.

Also guys, don’t forget the regional sections–Northwest, Foothills and East Side–also come out on Thursdays. Until recently, Northwest was actually staffed with reporters who wrote stories. Now the regional editor is writing too.

  4. Yes, FJ, that’s what I meant. Those Caliente stories are often written and filed several weeks ahead. I’m surprised they didn’t simply lop her byline off. Actually, there were 2 bylines of redundant workers in this week’s section. They also moved the adopt an animal feature from Saturday to Caliente, filling an entire page. I bet next week’s Caliente will be much thinner.

In today’s business section, there was a story with no byline, just “Arizona Daily Star,” meaning staff-written. Perhaps the late great Alex D. reported/wrote that one.

And have you noticed how much copy they are using from Cronkite News Service — from Sparky U’s journalism school. Also, the Star has “apprentices” (read: unpaid labor) doing a lot of work. Too bad the Guild was never able to make inroads at TNI.
