Rasmussen provides new numbers in the match-up between U.S. Sen. John McCain and GOP primary opponent J.D. Hayworth:

Senator John McCain continues to lead Arizona’s hotly contested Republican Senate Primary contest but his level of support is stuck in a narrow range between 47% and 53%.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters in Arizona finds McCain with 52% of the vote to challenger J.D. Hayworth’s 40%. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

Any incumbent who earns less 50% support is considered potentially vulnerable and McCain has been hovering around that mark all year. The 2008 Republican Presidential nominee cannot be comforted by the fact that his level of support in early primary polling is similar to the numbers for Arlen Specter. Specter, defeated by Joe Sestak, led in just about all early polling but could never get much above the 50% level of support. That provided Joe Sestak with a chance to defeat the 30-year veteran of the Senate yesterday.

That’s a wider lead than McCain had the most recent Rasmussen survey but close in line with other surveys.

Read Rasmussen’s take here. You’ll also find details on Brewer’s approval numbers, which have climbed to 85 percent among GOP primary voters, according to Rasmussen.

When you’re considering the numbers, remember that Rasmussen showed support for Prop 100 at 53 percent. The sales-tax hike won with 64 percent of the vote yesterday, so Rasmussen’s polling sample might not match up with who’s actually voting.

  1. McCain may still be ahead in the polls but he’s stuck around 50%, the deathknell for an incumbent. Another big government Republican who lost reelection in the primary recently is Bob Bennett from Utah, due to his voting for the TARP bailouts. The voters are in an anti-incumbent mood, and any big-spending incumbent polling around 50 right now is in danger of losing. McCain is going down that same path, desperately flip-flopping to try and maintain his support. I predict the voters see through him and support JD. 2. Let’s focus on getting the leading Pima County candidate elected. Never mind who wins the Maricopa County GOP primary.

  3. There is NO way McCain will not win this election. He is our best candidate Arizona! Do your research, as I have, and you will see that we are left with vulnerability in JD. We are left with McCain as our best candidate. JD left us high and dry when he decided to become friendly with criminal convicted lobbyist Abramoff. Abramoff gave JD money, luxuries, meals…all stolen money from Indian tribes, how shameful! If you want to forgive one immoral, unethical act, that is respectful, I agree. You cannot agree with him on his unethical radio campaigning before he officially announced his candidacy. JD lost his job in Congress, and in radio, both due to his lack of ethics. JD was a big spender in COngress, I am totally against the massive spending that is going on and it frightens me if we add more spenders to the mix.

  4. McCain is a belligerent and arrogant PROGRESSIVE. We need JD Hayworth like never before. McCain has been trying to do anything to smear him, mostly with dirty political tricks (what he appears to be best at). Its time to end the corruption McCain has brought us. Its time to end the weak Republican values McCain has brought us. Its time to end the embarassment McCain has brought us. Its time for a change. Its time for JD Hayworth.
