John Huppenthal, who is serving his final days as Superintendent of Public Instruction, notified Tucson Unified School District that it is in violation of A.R.S. §15-112.
The law in question prevents schools from promoting resentment towards a particular race among other, overthrowing the United States government, and advocating ethnic solidarity over treatment of people as individuals. If the TUSD is not found in compliance with the law by March 4, the Arizona Department of Education could decide to withhold 10 percent of the monthly apportionment of state aid each month until the violations are corrected.
From the press release:
“After a thorough review of materials from TUSD’s culturally relevant courses, I find that the district has failed to meet several provisions of the 2012 Settlement Agreement settlement and is once again in clear violation of A.R.S. §15-112. Furthermore, I am deeply concerned by the fact that the noncompliance appears to extend beyond classes taught from the Mexican American perspective and now also includes classes taught from the African American perspective.
“ADE staff has worked tirelessly to provide guidance and feedback as quickly as possible throughout the process so that district officials would have the resources needed to keep all culturally relevant courses in compliance with the law. This process has been made challenging by the fact that the district has failed to fully respond to several requests for information and has been inconsistent in its application of materials that have been provided.
“In issuing this finding before classes resume, I am hopeful that the district will take immediate action to comply with the law.”

And does this surprise you?
HANG TUSD….enough is enough. Why are they in the News all the time? You are supposed to EDUCATE our students, ALL of them, not just the “illegal” ones! Or just the brown ones!!! yes, Im latino…… the Legal Kind.
Close TUSD…it is corrupt beyond repair.
After reading this, and also the statute, I have two thoughts: (1.) John Huppenthal’s performance in office just might be the worst I have seen since I arrived in Arizona 40 years ago, and (2.) the statute is obviously designed to target one specific ethnic group while hedging, hemming and assenting to the rights of any other group to express their unique history and cultural solidarity. The voters (even in Maricopa County) were wise to dump both Huppenthal and his predecessor, Tom Horn, in the primaries.
That was the thing about TUSD when I went there. They were constantly violating the stuff we were learning were American rights in Social Studies classes.
Riddle me this…how does MAS or any other __AS promote a post-racial society? Seems a bit “divide and conquer”-y to me…
It’s kind of a Catch 22: TUSD is under a Unitary Status Plan, so must conform to making schools as racially diverse as possible…including their curriculum. Therefore, they have changed enrollment options to accommodate open-enrollment and school choice (focus schools, magnets). If they do not conform to achieve multi-cultural equity, they are breaking the law in the eyes of the court. If TUSD allows classes that focus on racial issues to attract students, they are breaking the law in the eyes of the state. It is easy to roast TUSD for being corrupt or inadequate, but are charter schools and other districts really any better? TUSD just gets too much publicity, because it is so huge. The state of Arizona has had it in for the district for years now. Many seem to think it is justified, so they say things like “dismantle the district” and “hang TUSD”. So, what do all you geniuses propose? Thousands of students, many below the poverty level, would be out of school, or scrambling to be enrolled at already crammed charters. Thousands of good people, teachers, aides, and staff who do nothing but work all day for the benefit of students, would be out of work. Got a solution for that? This state is on a downward slide of epic, McCartharian proportions, and the witch-hunt mentality is bound to continue with the next state administration. TUSD still has much house-cleaning to do, for sure, but the “grab your pitchforks” attitude of the politicians and public will not solve anything. Taking 10% of state funding will only hurt children, at the end of the day. Post-racial society is not achieved by burning public school students and employees. It is achieved by a paradigm shift in the attitudes of the general public and its so-called “leaders”.
So some Tea Party creep thinks that the university is violating the stupid racist law that he helped to spearhead. Boohoo.
Huh?
Violating an idiotic law that was passed to get Horne elected, as every Republican needs a boogie man to win. Obama, any Hispanic, anyone taking our guns away, Muslims, doesn’t matter, anyone will do as long as the Saddleback voters are scared to death.
What the C#%% is a “post-racial society” anyway? And are you sure you want one? I’d love a post racIST society but a post-racial society sounds awfully homogeneous, bland and boring. A melting pot melts the best of all cultures into something indistinguishable from mush, frankly. We need to figure out how to be a stew of many flavors, spices and textures. Good cooks know how to do this. John Huppenthahl, who reviewed the classes just a short while ago and proclaimed them okay, has clearly decided there is some reason to stir things up for his successor. His objection to reading materials and song lyrics that are publicly and widely available adds up to censorship, pure and simple. Does he propose to use songs from the 1900s and call them “relevant” to students? Unfortunately, I am finding out from reading “Teacher Wars” that this aim for state or federal administrators (mostly male) instead of teachers (mostly female) to run our schools and curricula is very very old. In fact Arizona seems to have yet to leave the early nineteenth century despite all the rhetoric about the 21st Century.
Poor Hupp thought he was the Superintendent of Public Obstruction and spent the last four years working his ass off to be just that. Boy was he surprised to find out schools were involved!
No doubt the La Raza Retards were behind this decision. It must have cost the traitorous Grijalvas a bundle to get this handed down like it is. No matter. The Sinaloan Cartel will make it up to them.
What did TUSD expect when they put the same people in charge that designed the previous MAS classes? Read the materials.
I don’t know why TUSD can’t just get on board with the program and teach white American history like they should. These stupid little beaner and spook kids can learn about their so-called history on their own time. Why should I, a white American pay for these kids to learn about things that aren’t even relevant in this day and age?
There’s a reason this country is the greatest nation on earth and that reason is the history of the white man. We took this land from the savages who were wasting it and turned it into the most powerful nation, ever. Now these stupid libtards want to give it all back to the people who couldn’t run it in the first place.
I say we should clean out TUSD from the top all the way down to the janitors. Get some real, patriotic Americans in there to teach the ungrateful turds what a gift they have been given from us whites and let them learn to appreciate it
If you found yourself agreeing with all my previous statements, please go jump off a cliff.
Double Huh? Some of these posters must have attended TUSD.
The People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn should be required reading for all Americans. Let’s quit feeding myths to our kids.
