President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden announced 23 executive actions in an effort to curb gun violence. Talking Points Memo has a list of them here.

Meanwhile, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly have a survey up as part of their new political committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions. You can let them know what you think here.

We’ve got an interview with Kelly in this week’s print edition, hitting the streets right now.

[Edited to correct misstatement on executive actions]

  1. UMMM they are NOT orders my understanding is they are “Actions” and the wordage is VERY important

    ORDERS are mandated these ACTIONS are more like SUGGESTIONS and he can later blame GOP

    If someone more knowledgeable than I or this author can elaborate I would be grateful

  2. Please get your terms correct. The are not Executive orders. These are Executive Actions. There is a very big difference.

  3. Read the 23 executive orders. Not impressed! Where is the dialog between state and federal government on a strict penelty for criminals who use firearms, more importantly “assault weapons?”
    Why does the federal government ( Obama-Biden) refuse to see that this is the whole problem? Every state has a different set of laws that penelize criminals for use of firearms, these are usually the first thing bartered away by lawyers before sentencing! At least two of these executive orders deal with mental health issues and the sharing of information dealing with firearms etc. Where is the recomendation for severe punisment for criminals using a firearm in a crime? Every state has set laws dealing with criminals and firearms. Why not make it so costly to the criminal if he uses a gun in a crime. Convicted of using a firearm in a crime, 25 to life, commit murder with a gun, death penelty. Make it universal in all states and take the plea bargin where guns are off the table, not an issue. You used a gun your convicted you go to jail.
    The subject of security in schools was so barley touched it was comical. I can defend my self anywhere but my children need to feel and be safe in school. Five hundred million dollars is nowhere enough. Make security in our schools a federal issue! Because of Newtown, many schools have hired armed guards, which aready eats into a limited budget, upgrade the schools and hire trained people to make sure our schools are secure and make that their only job. They shouldn’t be baby sitters, their only job should be security.
    I can’t believe that we have these minds in government and they can’t see the solutions when it’s right in front of their noses.

  4. Willy,

    This is not about school safety! Since the shooting at Sandy Hook there have been over 900 American citizens killed from gun fire (this does not include suicides)! That is only one month!

    Here in Tucson we have had at least 5 people killed by gun fire since Dec. 14th, here is one of them;

    Ashley Hicks, 23, murdered in a parking lot by an ex whom she had a restraining order against. (The man also killed himself with the gun.)

    Here is a good link to follow some of these gun deaths;

  5. A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer’s hand.” – Lucius Annaeus Seneca, c. 4BC – 65AD.

  6. Roman law during and just after Senecas life agreed that people were the problem not the ontology of the weapon. That is why they instituted laws to prevent and limit the possession and sales of weapons by people.

    Background Check/Licensing ;

    “Absolutely no one is granted the ability to wield arms (nulli…armorum movendorum copia tribuatur) of any description whatsoever without our knowledge and consent” (CJ.11.47(46).1, A.D. 364).xx

    Sales to foreigners or foreign nations;

    “Let no one dare to sell to foreign-born barbarians of any race whatsoever, who claim to have come to this most holy city on an embassy, or on any other errand, or to any other city or place, leather cuirasses (loricas), shields (scuta), arrows for the bow (arcus sagittas), doubled-edged swords (spathas), ordinary swords (gladios), or arms (arma) of any other type. Not a single weapon (tela) and absolutely nothing made of iron, finished or still unfinished, is to be sold to these same persons in pieces (distrahatur) by any person. For it is destructive to the Roman Empire and next to treasonous to furnish such barbarians, who should be deprived of these things, with weapons (telis), with the result that they become more fearsome. If anyone, moreover, has sold in any place to foreign-born barbarians from any nation any kind of arms (aliquid armorum genus) contrary to the piety of our laws, we decree that his entire property immediately be confiscated and added to the public treasury, and that he also suffer the penalty of death (CJ.4.41.2, a.d. 455-57).xxi

    How many guns sold at gun shows or shops here in AZ have ended up in the hands of Mexican terrorists (Drug Cartels)?
