Leo W. Banks, who has been covering border issues for years, brings us news that Rob Krentz was killed yesterday in the Chiricahua Corridor.
Leo—who has written about the Krentz family before (see here)—says:
Cochise County rancher Rob Krentz was shot and killed on his ranch some time Saturday, presumably by a drug smuggler.
The death, which being investigated as a homicide, occurred in the San Bernardino Valley, part of the Malpais region. The event has rocked the towns of Douglas and Portal, and the ranches in between, both of which have been under siege by cross-border smugglers for years.
As the Weekly has reported, the situation in the so-called Chiricahua Corridor has deteriorated lately, leaving residents fearful that an episode of this kind was inevitable. The grief is great for the Krentz family and their many friends throughout Southeast Arizona; Krentzes have been ranching in Cochise County for more than a century.
The Weekly has received word that a representative for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has placed calls to Cochise County, trying to set up a community meeting, either Monday or Tuesday at 11 a.m., possibly at the Apache School. The Giffords’ rep making the arrangements said it is possible she will ask the president to place military units in the besieged area
A source tells the Weekly the practical impact of Giffords’ actions might be small, but at least she is paying attention. The source said, “Kolbe laughed at us when we complained, and McCain worries about getting his patent leather shoes dirty when he’s down here.”

One thing I failed to mention in my post is that Apache school is no larger than a small house with a 10’high fence around it,with a padlocked gate.If Giffords really wanted to hold a community meeting she would need to do it at the Rodeo,New Mexico community hall or the Portal Fire Station.Oh,the reason the school is in lock-down,the drug mules go right by it and have been seen by the kids during the day.Gifford better do her homework before she comes down here,at least on where to have her meeting.

I knew Rob Krentz and he was a good man, a good father, and a great American.
If the government can not protect us, they are forcing us to take care of the problem. This senceless loss is not something that is going to go away quietly. And until our borders are secure, every family along the United States/Mexico border is in danger.
There are no words for the sadness we all feel relating to the death of this innocent man. He was simply going about his business, checking on his cattle. Our hearts go out to his family.
I am furious and ready to vote out every politician in our State and Washington. We have been asking for help with this serious drug and illegal issue for months. We warned anyone that would listen that someone was going to get killed. Nothing was done except to heighten Border Patrol in the area. This is a vast area and those officers have worked diligently trying to assist, along with the Cochise County Sheriff’s office. Where is our military and why is it not assisting in protecting America and Americans? Ms. Napolitano’s statement to Bill O’Reilly last week that our “borders are secure” was an absolute bunch of hog wash. No one, especially our National Security Advisor, could be that ignorant of what is going on in this area! This situation was created by channeling drug trafficing and illegal activity up Highway 80. This channeling was done by building the fence and leaving this corridor open. It was hoped to keep the issues away from heavily populated areas and direct it to a locale where fewer losses might occur. The military should have been put on our border as soon as that decision was made.
Ms. Gifford has not been interested in our plight until this murder of an innocent citizen, neither have her counterparts. Only lip service has been paid to the problem. CLOSE THE BORDER and let Mexico clean up its porch before this turns into a blood bath! People in this valley are fearful and are arming themselves. This death is going to start a chain of events that could rapidly spread out of control if allowed to continue.
Amnesty to illegals should not even be considered until we can be assured these types of situations will not happen to our own citizens. Every day the Border Patrol catch gang members, drug lords, child molesters, and other types of criminals flooding into America through these open borders. Read their reports! What happened to government of the people, by the people, for the people? How did we end up with no rights while the illegals (In case no one remembers, IT IS ILLEGAL to enter the United States without going through proper procedures!) and drug runners are being offered amnesty by the very government that is supposed to be protecting American citizens?
And further, Ms. Napolitano should be here in person to explain to this sad family how our borders are so secure!

We live just North of Nogales and have BP Hellicopters in the sky checking the known trails of the Mules, almost 24/7. My Daughter is a Neighbor to the Krentz Ranch and the only time there is BP in the air is for a specific incident. If we can use regular ariel patrols over the Pakistan Border, why can’t we use the same resources on our SE Border? Giffords speaks about bringing in the Military; she needs to get her girly rear end on a horse and ride that back country. It is impossible to protect on foot or in a 4 wheeler, it’s just too rough. Our Government owes all of us “Equal Protection” or we will be forced to protect ourselves and not be held liable. Give those Ranchers a few spare Drones and let them have at it.

I called and e-mailed Jan Brewer’s office today demanding the National Guard be put on our border before more of our citizens are killed by illegals! Please do the same for all our elected officials until our border is secured!
The rino John McCain supports criminal illegals in our state and wants amnesty for them, veto him out of office! Amnesty would only bring another hord across our border.
Excuse me people, but who keeps electing John McCain & Jon Kyl? How many town halls did they have in your community? Sure, sit on your asses and complain, complain to high heaven. Point fingers, blame. Put all of the responsibility on someone else.
Military’s worked elsewhere on border enforcement. Makes sense to deploy them down there. Doesn’t sound like a bad detail, whole lot less risky than af – raq – pak – ran.
For that reason, that’s why I like Gifford’s thinking. She’s more focused on finding a solution to the problem rather than pointing fingers and blaming in order to get up higher on the ladder. This is a lady who’s doing her job. No matter what your political affiliation, that can’t be denied. You can twist it around and try to attach ulterior motives to it, sure, but one thing is for certain, this woman isn’t sitting down with her thumb up her ass unlike certain people in our own state legislature. Paton isn’t going to win her seat by trying to minimize her efforts. He needs to make sure that his own efforts, and most importantly, his results, exceed hers. For that reason, if Paton has ideas about this issue, he needs to act on this story immediately and produce decisions with results on the border.
And to think we though the ‘under the fence tunnel’ of the 80’s was bad!! Grew up near there. A few came across in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and now and then broke into ranch houses (including one in my family). Could always get stolen guns back by passing ‘bucks’ through Percy Bowden (Douglas police chief). NOT NOW. Prohibition failed in the 20’s, and drug prohibition is even worse than what I remember my folks and grandparents talking about. Practically – eliminate the drug market here, and the drug lords will have to find other ways. Bring back the work visas of the 50’s, and a lot of the illegal smuggling market can go away, too. The economy in Mexico has always been a problem. I’m really not in favor of letting all the illegals stay (there are a lot in Texas, too), BUT how in the heck can we deport millions??? If we do something about the jobs and something about the drugs (to make the illegal stuff not pay) – then maybe our country can work closer with Mexico to make their economy better. Quite frankly, most of the people of the US that have never lived close to the border even give a damn. IT IS A FEDERAL PROBLEM. My thoughts and prayers are with the Krentz family, and all the others who live along our border. CONGRESS — get to work on this too!!!

Hi Everybody! I just want to let you know that there isn’t anything on the “news radar”…up here in Chicago (where I live) about this story. I myself, accidentally stumbled across it while having my morning coffee, and since that moment, I have been reading all I can (following links, etc.) until just now..when I found myself reading these comments from “The Range”. And for the first time today,I feel that I am listening to a group of people that I could feel safe enough to sit down and talk to over coffee about this.And Bridget, you’re right. For what it’s worth, all 18 comments before mine..I feel compelled to thank you for speaking up, and letting me know that I am not the Only One. I feel so “blind-sided” by what I’ve learned today. What happened to the Good Samaritan Rancher and what is happening along our borders deserves to be heard All Over Our Country. Why is it that you don’t care? About Arizona? About its people? Why don’t you care about the Arizona’s border and what’s happening there? What will it take for you to care and to take action? Money? Why is it that you care more about getting reelected and what the rest of the country thinks of you and not about Arizona and what the people of Arizona think of you? Are you so greedy? Who has lined your pockets because I bet you a buck that’s the case. So selfish? Why should you be reelected?
I live and worked and played in Arizona for 35 years! I’m not there now, but my heart is! And I read and read and read ad nauseam about what is occurring there and I try to find news, articles, ANYTHING that will speak to its senators and congressmen DOING SOMETHING TO STOP THIS HEMORRAGE! I never see anything. I don’t live there now but I hope to once again. I’ve got to tell you that if and when I do move back I will do everything in my power to make sure that you are not reelected. It’s hard to gauge precisely what people expect their congressperson to do. The congressperson could plead for the feds to send the military in to help, and the likelihood is that they’ll get a minimal response, if any at all. The military is currently overextended in other places, but even with what’s left here, the feds aren’t very likely to deploy a large amount of resources to the border. Unfortunately, it’ll take a lot more than Rep. Giffords asking for it to get it done.
I grew up ranching in Cochise County and knew a lot of these folks. I’ve got property only a few miles from where this occurred. At this point we have a rabid crowd of mexican haters making a spectacle out of a tragic murder of a wonderful gentleman. Our sheriff has said that he and his investigators do not know who committed the crime, but every hater in the area has crawled out from under their rocks to use it to promote their agenda. Let our sheriff do his job. Personally, I’m pleased that Representative Giffords is down here attempting to help. Can we please loose all this hatred and rabid partisanship, It shows disrespect for Rob and is not helpful at all!

MY efforts exceed those of Gabrielle Giffords. …So she wrote the President a letter. Big f’ing deal. She needs to get IN HIS FACE… but she won’t, because her actions now are nothing but political posturing. The Krentz Family should begin a wrongful death lawsuit against the federal government for failure to defend him from a foriegn invader. This is a foreign invasion primarily because of Americans’ lust for drugs. Legalize marijuana, grow your own, and put hard drug sellers and users in jail.
I grew up on a ranch in South Texas near the Mexican border. Border crossers worked on our ranch, they always knew when we needed more workers. We had simple housing and much better wages than they could get in Mexico. If they were just passing through they knew they could get water from our windmills and food at our kitchen door. We never had any trouble. But that was all before Americans wanted drugs from Mexico.
As for comments about Gifford, why would she want the terror to continue on the border? I don’t know her but she must be better than Janet “The System Works” Napolitano. Why don’t Arizona politicians raise hell about the border and insist on stopping the illegal crossings and drug trafficking? Looks like it is up to the citizens.
How it works down by the border is that someone (mexican) drops off a package. Then an american smuggler picks it up. It’s not an immigration problem, it’s a drug problem. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The truth is, NOBODY knows who killed this man. NOBODY! As stated above, it may well have been a US ANGLO WHITER THAN CARNATION MILK individual! Your hunger for DRUGS is the problem. For all we know it may have been a family member. folks I know that live in the area have stated that there has been a rivalry brewing within the Krentz family concerning that land! It is unfortunate that Mr. Krentz had to die in order for this issue to receive increased attention. The fact is that depending on who’s numbers you believe, 1 to 12 American’s are murdered each day in America by criminals who have immigrated to the US illegally, mostly from Mexico. Research it yourself.
Regarding elected officials, come on people! How naive are you?! Really. If you have spent as much time around these people as I have you will come to learn that they are concerned with one thing and one thing only … keeping their jobs. And when 20%-30% of their constituency support illegal immigration, guess what, so does the elected official or they become un-elected.
The difference between that 20%-30% and the rest of you, is that you are politically absent (for the most part) and they are extremely active and organized in politics and will actively seek to remove and/or block candidates that do not support their views. McCain is terrified of them, as are most of the other curmedgeons out there.
The answer for Arizona is; first get rid of McCain, he failed at his duty. Miserably. Next file a lawsuit against DC for deriliction of duty (as part of states joining the union the fed is obligated to provide defense from foreign invaders, clearly they have failed to do so – willingly). Next, build your own wall at the border, and send the bill to DC. There is $1 trillion in unspent ARRA funds that will otherwise go toward fixing road pot-holes around the country.
