Daheny is his usual blusteringly offensive self, and I may pen you an actual letter to the editor about the latest column. I do wonder about the cover story; a lot of it seems to be more along the lines of a “book report” or research paper, summarizing the Gordon book (which I read a year and a half ago, and quite like), rather than new reporting. I was happy to see attention drawn to this compelling story of early Arizona and the roles of race, class, and religion in frontier adoptions, but disappointed that there was very little that was new to the Weekly’s reporting. Did it make the cover just because a weak St. Paddy’s Day link?
Every year, Margaret does a Irish-themed cover story before St. Patrick’s day. Also, the Weekly has a long history of doing compelling, research-based stories about Arizona history. Dave Devine, Leo W. Banks and Margaret Regan all do them time to time. I thought this week’s story was fantastic–no weak link at all.
Okay, I was just asking. Like I said, because I read the book already, I guess I probably had more information than the average reader. It’s a fascinating tale, I think, though!
