Tucson Unified School District Board Member Adelita Grijalva announced her intention to run for the Pima County District 5 seat in a Facebook post this afternoon. The announcement comes days District 5 Supervisor Richard Elias died on Saturday and just a week before the filing deadline to seek the office.

From the FB post:

The loss of Richard Eliás comes as our lives already feel turned upside down. With his sudden death, we have lost a true champion for Pima County. While we have no public opportunity to grieve or support one another, we are quickly approaching an April 6th election deadline that will not budge.

With the support of Emily and Luz Eliás, and with great pride and sorrow, I announce my candidacy for Pima County Supervisor District 5. I never expected to be in this position, to stand up under these circumstances to protect all that Richard stood for and cared about.

With your help, we must continue to fight for our shared progressive values and continue Richard’s lasting legacy for our children and for our future. We must come together to protect our hard working families, our Sonoran Desert and our beloved Tucson. We cannot afford to lose our voice on the Pima County Board. I humbly ask for your support and help today, as we take this important step forward together.

Resist. Much love.

Thanks,
Adelita

Grijalva will be in a race against time trying to collect 199 signatures from registered democrats in District 5 before the Monday, April 6 deadline.

  1. Wow, just wow. Elias isn’t even cold yet and this “person” is already announcing she wants his seat. Disgraceful, to say the LEAST.

  2. It takes incredible commitment to someone’s legacy to be moved to action despite the insurmountable grief that is often paralyzing. What an incredible way to honor Richard’s legacy and as he would have it, much work remains to be done.

  3. Just what we need. Another Grijalva on a board in control of Tucson. First, Raul. Next, Regina Romero, Mayor. Bought and paid for by Raul’s compadres and married to Raul’s chief of staff. Then, we have Adelita Grijalva announcing before Richard Elias is in the ground. Nice!

  4. Legacy? Let’s talk about legacy. I watched neighbors in the street yesterday filling 18″ potholes in the streets with dirt. They have bent our wheels, blown out tires and broken suspension parts. The city and the county have lost the trust of the public as they have failed us.

And they talk about championing the causes of the poor while they enrich themselves. By the way, how are the poor doing? No better.

    Tucson is turning into Mexico.

  5. @azstar is reporting she has setup signature drive in front of her father’s federal office which is blatant abuse of his power. All interested candidates must file suit for equal access to stop the fraud.

  6. You’ve already screwed TUSD up beyond belief Adelita, now you’re going to jump in and ruin the rest of Pima County. I cannot wait to move out of this northern Mexico cesspool and I’m a third generation Arizonan. My family helped build this state but southern Arizona is now Grijalva territory and they are destroying it.

  7. Look at how many TUSD schools closed down because of Adelita Grijalva! TUSD is such a crappy district now.

Since Adelita Grijalva was in office many schools shut down.

If she is on the board of supervisors things will get much worse in Tucson and Pima County.

There is so much poverty and hardship in southern arizona because of the Grijalvas.

When will this crony politics end?

    They gerrymandered the districts.

I hope that Fernando Gonzales or Chang get appointed.

  8. Give Fernando Gonzales or Chang a chance.

Why do the Grijalvas have to hog all the positions?

Look at all the TUSD schools closed down because of Adelita Grijalva! She instigated the Charter School Mecca.

  9. Why do the Grijalvas have to hog all the positions?

Give somebody else a chance! This is not Russia!

  10. azstar is reporting she has setup signature drive in front of her father’s federal office which is blatant abuse of his power.

Constituents are going to go to go to her father’s federal office for assistance and then the constituents will likely be coerced to sign the petition under false pretenses for assistance. I’ve seen it before it happens all the time.

All interested candidates must file suit for equal access to stop the fraud.

  11. Adelita, why don’t don’t you do something on your own for change and not ride on your dad’s coattails!

Why are you using your dad’s FEDERAL office?????

Apparently you need a lesson on ethics.

People may like your dad, but many of us don’t like you! We think you are spoiled and riding on your dad’s coattails.

    VOTE FERNANDO!

  12. ATTENTION EVERYONE:

Let’s report Adelita Grijalva to the Arizona Attorney General for election fraud. The Arizona AG recently received $530,000 to investigate election fraud. With enough complaints we can make this happen!

  13. Resist what Adelita? The desires of American citizens just like your father. Resist our laws. Resist following the oath of office.

Call County Supes and say enough is enough. No Adelita. No Mas por favor.

  14. This is NOT what Richie would have wanted. He despised Adelita!

The seat does not belong to the grijalva dynasty.

    It belongs to the people!

Adelita is a spoiled brat, riding on the coattails of her father!

What has she done to help us during the pandemic? …NOTHING!

  15. This is what a real leader does for it’s citizens. They look for awesome opportunities to help.

    Just tweeted:

    @Donald J Trump
With interest rates for the United States being at ZERO, this is the time to do our decades long awaited Infrastructure Bill. It should be VERY BIG & BOLD, Two Trillion Dollars, and be focused solely on jobs and rebuilding the once great infrastructure of our Country! Phase 4

Not the shovel ready BS jobs and money dumping Obama foisted on us to promote his socialist agenda. These are the real fixes that will create great jobs and do even more for our citizens.

Once again this is exactly why he will be re elected.

Democrats have no plan, that is good for us.

  16. She can run for the seat all she wants but they should not appoint her to it in the interim just because her dad used to have the same position. That’s nepotism.

The tie breaking vote will be Julie Castañeda, the Clerk of the Board. Here is her office’s phone number: (520) 724-8449

This is public information. Let her know how you feel.

Personally, I think the Pima County Board of Supervisors and Julie Castaneda should nominate Elias’ Executive Assistant, Keith Bagwell. This is the most prudent decision to respect the voters, Elias memory and his political positions. If the voters want to change direction, let us do it during the next election!

  17. The Pima County Democratic Party (4639 E. First St.) has signature sheets for all FIVE (now) candidates looking to hold this seat. (All candidates have been invited to provide signature sheets) There is a table and a volunteer out in front of the office ready to take your drive-by signatures in accordance with social distancing norms. The signature table will be available from 11-2, Thursday (today) to Saturday.
