Downtown’s Etherton Gallery is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act with a glorious display of photography from Ansel Adams and Debra Bloomfield. I saw this exhibition yesterday. The ubiquitous nature of Ansel Adams photography sometimes makes one forget about how special his work is until of course we go out and try to take a photograph of Gates Pass or something similar. His work transcends the medium and he makes it look so easy. Bloomfield’s images are beautiful, but rely on larger scale for less impact than Adams’ work in my mind. Nevertheless there are a couple images where she caught just the right light in the tree branches for a special moment of beauty.
This is generally an exhibition that is not confrontational or earth shattering, but it is beautiful work. Support the arts in Tucson, go to a gallery, because sadly their numbers in this town are dwindling, and venues that are able to show genuine non touristy, non amateur work in Tucson are an endangered species.
