Attorney Jeff Rogers, representing Legislative District 9 voter Paul Hilts, has filed a lawsuit today to knock state Rep. Ethan Orr from the 2014 ballot.

Orr, a freshman Republican in a swing district that includes midtown Tucson and the Catalina Foothills, would be facing two Democrats, state Rep. Victoria Steele and political newcomer Randy Friese, in November if he remains on the ballot.

Rogers, a former chairman of the Pima County Democratic Party, alleges in his lawsuit that Orr did not collect enough signatures on his nominating petitions. According to his calculations, 123 people who signed the petitions do not live and are not registered to vote in LD9; 83 people are not registered to vote; six signatures come from people who signed the petitions more than once; 61 signatures come from people who are not registered Republicans; and 15 signatures are “illegible, incomplete or otherwise invalid.”

A court hearing on the matter has been scheduled for June 18.

More details as we get them.

  1. Really not a surprise considering Representative Orr’s disdain for Campaign sign regulations and his failure to stand up against extremists in his Party. Representative Orr has a history of putting a very little effort in for his constituents, I for one will be glad to see some one Representing us who actually cares about the voters in their District.

  2. The 61 signatures who are not registered as Republicans might well be independents. Those without a party preference can sign either Republican or Democratic or no-party preference petitions. Over 40% of the Arizona voters are neither Republicans nor Democrats, a percentage that is growing. Watching this kind of cat fight probably will swing a few more into re-registering as having no party preference. Just go on line, change your registration, and send a message to both parties.

  3. Ironic that Ethan Orr who voted for HB 2305 that would have changed Arizona’s election laws to make it harder for Libertarians & Green party candidates to get on the ballot, created unnecessary hurdles for those circulating initiative, referendum and recall petitions, and easier to kick voters off of the permanent voting lists now finds his nominating petitions challenged. That’s what I call poetic justice.

  4. Why can’t we just find an honest candidate to stop the Democratic destruction of our city, county, and country?
