ANOTHER UPDATE: This is only getting weirder, so we added a follow-up post.
UPDATE (by Dan Gibson): A very angry person named Ernie Mennes, who claimed to be the managing partner of V Modern Thai, called to say that the restaurant isn’t closing and that he’s filing a police report against us for this post. Mennes isn’t listed on the Corporation Commission listing for the restaurant, although he posted on V’s page in December discussing a “national & international roll-out”, but we are making an effort to confirm with someone from the actual restaurant what’s going on.
The always evolving downtown scene will apparently lose another restaurant this week. We have learned from a reliable source that V Modern Thai has announced its last business day will be Sunday, May 10. Restaurant owner Vila Jarrell renamed the restaurant —originally Vila Thai Cuisine—and moved from University Boulevard to its current location on 9 East Congress Street in 2011.
Here’s a tweet from KGUN producer Ken Carr’s What’s Up Tucson feed:
V Modern Thai restaurant in downtown Tucson is closing for good this Sunday. You still have a few days to get in for one last meal.— Whats Up Tucson (@whatsuptucson) May 6, 2014
Somewhat strangely, the restaurant’s Facebook page doesn’t mention the closing and is still putting up photos of dishes this morning.
Jarrell couldn’t be reached for comment, but we’ll let you know if and when we hear an update.
This article appears in May 1-7, 2014.

Sorry to hear this. V is a great place.
The information posted by Tucson Weekly is false and was posted to cause harm to V Modern THai.
The weekly just published a tweet. Besides, how could this possibly harm you anymore than you’ve already done yourself?
oopsie…
Visibility on University Ave was hard, but those who knew (and many did) went and went often. I long saw the red V downtown but never really knew what it was for…maybe visibility in downtown is worse?
Sounds like Ernie Mennes has been reading Ally Miller’s playbook.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of people!! Thanks for offering noodles to play music at your restaurant then attacking me in nasty emails and slander to musicians and businesses when I took exception to your wonderful offer of nothing. V and husband (the caveman in the kitchen) were so wonderful to me to ask me to play then trash me so openly to others…even former students of mine. The threats of professional damage in Facebook messages were a nice touch. Thanks V Thai! Good riddance.
Holy junk. Who cares?
The food was pretty bad, even for Thai food in Tucson. I hope the staff is able to find new work, I feel bad for them.
I love good Thai food. I have eaten at all the Thai restaurants in Tucson. This one was very good. EVERY time we were there the owner would walk to every table asking how the food is and if she could get them anything. The employees were also very friendly and gave terrific service.
For those better than thou ass wipes who have never owned their own business, worked mega hours, drained blood, sweat and tears and to then so readily to pass judgement and praise a business is closing….shame on you. Is the word empathy in your vocabulary? I suspect not. Enjoy hell.
Um, Jesus? Draining blood, sweat and tears into a restaurant is never a good idea. The health department has strict regulations about those sorts of things.
