The latest Tucson Weekly/Wick Communications Poll shows that Democrat Gabrielle Giffords has an 18-point lead over Republican Randy Graf.

The survey shows that 52 percent of voters surveyed supported Giffords, while just 34 percent supported Graf. Almost 10 percent of voters said they were undecided.

“I think the poll shows broad, bipartisan support across the district for Gabrielle Giffords,” said Giffords campaign manager Rodd McLeod. “Ultimately, people are looking for someone who can reach across the party aisle and get things done. We’ve got a Congress that’s just not effective.”

Graf campaign manager R.T. Gregg said his candidate is still suffering from negative attacks during the GOP primary, but there’s still plenty of time for Graf to bounce back.

“The only poll that matters is the one that voters cast,” Gregg said. “We’re not going to fall victim to being paralyzed by polls. We’ve got to get our message out.”

While the size of Giffords’ lead has varied in the polls that have been released to the public, Graf’s support has remained in the mid-30s in each of them.

The survey found that Giffords was enjoying significant crossover support from Republicans. Only 62 percent of GOP voters said they would vote for Graf, while more than 85 percent of Democrats said they would support Giffords.

Libertarian candidate David Nolan had the support of 1.2 percent of surveyed voters, while independent candidate Jay Quick had 2 percent.

The Tucson Weekly/Wick Communications Poll, conducted by veteran pollster Margaret Kenski, surveyed 402 voters between Sept. 20 and Sept. 23. The margin of error is 4.3 percent.

More details can be found in the upcoming dead-plant-matter edition of the Tucson Weekly.

  1. Three polls now. Graf behind by 12, 18, and 19. He was down by ten the week of the primaries. He is stuck at 32-35% support, and with only 10% undecided he will not get much higher.

His blogers were claiming that the 12% poll showed he had momentum, coming as it did after the 19% poll. Now we get 18%…so much for Graf’s momentum.

I think the adds claiming Giffords is a liberal extremist, coming as they do mere weeks after Weiss was asserting Giffords was a closet Republican, are not finding many believers. Combined these assertions seem to prove Giffords is exactly what she claims to be, a moderate Democrat.

  2. Randy Graf likes to say he puts principles over politics.
The only principles I can glean from his nearly all-negative campaign are: (1) Graf seems to want us to think he speaks for God, and (2) that he (and therefore God?) want 8 million Hispanics deported and a wall built to keep them out. Where were all the Republican moderates in the primary? Giffords in a cakewalk.

  3. ” Where were all the Republican moderates in the primary? ”

    Morning (way early morning),
I believe that moderates existed in the Republican primary, but toppling Graf became the main issue for the primary. At least it was for Huffman’s campaign, it felt like. Graf had name recognition entering, and was the strongest “right-wing” candidate. It could well have been that the moderates split themselves — remember the calls from some for Hellon to resign and throw his support for Huffman?

Weiss and Giffords, I thought, played politics cleaner during the Democratic primary, running less negative campaigns. The rest (Latas, etc) were ignored for the most part.

  4. As an aside, something wild I noted was in the 27 September issue of the Northwest Explorer — an online poll showed that if an election were held last week, voters would go 77% Graf, 19% Giffords. Now, of course an online poll is to be evaluated on four merits:
    – Who conducted it
    – What was the survey sample
    – How was it conducted
    – and How were the question(s) worded
Minding that, who knows how many people voted, or if there were any ballot stuffings.

Still, it suggests the Northwest voice is Republican, which actually correlates with the 2004 general election where midtown voted Kerry and out-of-Tucson Pima County voted Bush, IIRC.

  5. Arizona Dumbest state in nation!

LOL Graf is arizona’s best friend. You have to stop the flow of hispanics into the US or your state is going to become more and more abysmal.

  6. Yeah, Arizona’s problems MUST have to do with immigration, and they have nothing to do with the longstanding corruption at the capitol. Of COURSE. And the golf pro will save the day! Ha!

  7. Yes! All of Arizona’s, and for that matter America’s problems, can be traced back to immigrants. A century and a half ago it was the Irish and German immigrants. Therefore, let’s deport all Americans with Irish and German ancestry . . . starting with Pat Buchanan (Irish) and
    Randy Graf (German).

  8. Actually, the deal was made before she made the legislature. And the ad is full of crap. This deal is newsworthy — not because of anything having to do with Giffords, but because it’s another inept Rio Nuevo transaction.

  9. You are correct as far as the legislature term. That makes it even worse and shows she was into the elite circles prior to her election.
Now, if you think the ad was crap, start disproving the following info and documentation.
Giffords is dirty and is willing to do or say whatever is needed to get to DC.

According to the Articles of Organization of Giffords Management Group, Gabrielle Giffords is a MANAGER of Giffords Management Group, which, in partnership with another party, operates El Campo Property Rentals, the company that leased the land to the City of Tucson. As a manager she had executive power over the lease decision. The Articles of Organization document also shows that the Gabrielle D. Giffords exempt trust is also a member of the Giffords Management Group.

Regardless of whether the Environmental Protection Agency or the City of Tucson paid for the cleanup, the taxpayers of the City paid nearly one million dollars to Giffords and the taxpayers also paid to clean up the property. It is questionable that the taxpayers should pay one million dollars rent and also to pay to clean up the Giffords property.

The property did have serious environmental concerns, as attested to by the Phase I Environmental Site Assessment. These environmental concerns were remediated by the City and the EPA before the final environmental assessment, which as expected, would find no environmental contamination because it had already been cleaned up!

There is a public record of the presence of two leaking underground storage tanks on the property. This record is available for all to see at the ADEQ web site at this URL: http://www.azdeq.gov/databases/lustsearch.html just type in facility ID # 0-009809 and Leak ID # 5290.01 and hit search. This record confirms that there were two leaking underground storage tanks on the property and that they were cleaned up. In addition, the ADEQ has a file 600 pages thick detailing all the work that had to be done on the property.

The Daily Star misses the fact that the PHASE I Environmental Assessment found that there were serious environmental concerns and that the City and the EPA cleaned up these environmental concerns, including leaking underground fuel storage tanks, heavily oil contaminated soil and asphalt, asbestos and three subsurface hydraulic lift reservoirs.

The Daily Star misses the fact that while the City and/or the EPA were cleaning up the environmental concerns and demolishing the old buildings, the City paid nearly one million dollars in rent for the property.

Finally, after all the demolition was finished, a final environmenmtal study was done, which, understandably, found no contamination at that point in time. For Arizona Daily Star to report that there was never contamination on the property based solely on the final assessment is just wrong.

Let’s review. There was environmental contamination. Gabrielle Giffords is and was part of the shell corporation that is a party to this deal. The taxpayers paid nearly a million dollars to rent the property AND paid to clean up the environmental contamination. The property is not part of Rio Nuevo. And the lot continues to sit vacant while Gabrielle Giffords’ shell corporation continues to collect the rent paid for by the taxpayers.
