In the City of Tucson election, all the races have been decided by wide margins, somewhat surprisingly in the case of Ward 3, as Karin Uhlich greatly expanded her margin of victory over Ben Buehler-Garcia from just over a hundred votes in 2009 to thousands this year. Uhlich told Jim Nintzel, “We were singled out from the get-go, everything was thrown at us. We won and we won big, and that means we’re on the right track.”

Ward 5’s Richard Fimbres, who has a similarly large lead over Mike Polak, said “We moved this city forward, but lots more needs to be done. We’re not out of the tunnel yet, but we’re moving forward.”

The results, so far:

  1. Population of around 520,000 to 525,000.
Less then 25% are under 18 (2010 census), meaning something on the order of 400,000 eligible adults (less convicts)
Looking like total voter participation of only around 60,000 “so far”… so even if it tops out at 75,000 it means that 4 out of 5 “adults” didn’t vote.

    Tucson, you’re pathetic.
It couldn’t be easier: simply fill out the ballot, sign the envelope, and mail it in.
So I guess only a few of us can complain as the city council is set to spend money I don’t have to give.
Just label me “a bled dry turnip”

  2. Wow so scary, Ulrich says Tucson is on the right track, she is so wrong. Voters just don’t get it in Tucson. Like Detroit, MI, voters continue to elect the crooks and Detroit finally failed, Tucson will do the same. I voted to defeat both of the council members and I am an Ind. I vote for candidates that will make a positive different for the city and not the same old failure that go back 10s of years. When will Tucson voters get smart and not get fooled by these city council members.

  3. Sam, you ought not call people crooks without clearly naming names and showing some indication of the reasons for doing so. When I was a kid the rule was: put up or shut up.

  4. Sam if you can’t even spell the name of Uhlich, which is Karin’s last name, correctly, you have no credibility.

  5. Nice — you conveniently forgot that the Green Candidate, Mary DeCamp, garnered those thousands of votes that nearly cost Karin the seat last time with a REAL Progressive platform and some damn good ideas…

    Shallow “reporting”…

  6. ChetDude,

For the record, I mentioned Mary’s campaign in my cover story on the race last month.

That said, Mary could have doubled her 2009 vote count in yesterday’s race and Karin still would have won, so it might be your analysis that is a bit “shallow.” If I had to guess, I’d say that most of Mary’s votes came from Democrats who were unhappy with Karin for some reason or another and were looking for a way to cast a protest vote–and thus, you shouldn’t read Mary’s support as an endorsement of her platform, which most voters were probably unaware of.

FWIW, Mary endorsed Karin this time out, while your other perennial Green, Dave Croteau, endorsed BBG.

  7. To Franklymydears:
Here is your answer to Sam Smith. RIO NUEVO.$230,000,000 for nothing. I would call that a crime of the first order.
