The reciprocal energy between musicians and fans brings them closer, fostering a deep connection that enhances the concert experience.

The Canadian pop band Barenaked Ladies knows this all too well. Besides hits like โ€œIf I Had a Million Dollarsโ€ and โ€œOne Week,โ€ Barenaked Ladiesโ€™ live shows feature impromptu riffs โ€” and breakdancing. Itโ€™s all in the name of fun.

At the Kino Sports Complex, Barenaked Ladies will bring that package to the Centurionsโ€™ benefit, A Naughty Yachty Affair, on Saturday, April 26. Yachtley Crew opens the show.

โ€œItโ€™s an honor for someone to ask us to play at a benefit โ€” especially if itโ€™s community-run and everybody really owns the cause,โ€ said bassist Jim Creeggan. โ€œIโ€™m excited about this one.โ€ย

He is curious about one part of the benefit, however.

โ€œThe โ€˜naughtyโ€™ part,โ€ Creeggan said with a laugh. โ€œIโ€™m wondering what kind of โ€˜naughtyโ€™ this is. I guess Iโ€™ll find out on stage.โ€

Concerts are the lifeblood of Barenaked Ladies. The bandโ€™s musicianship is often overlooked for hook-laden lyrics and upbeat melodies.ย

Their musical improvisations in concert and clever deep cuts are just as notable. Take a track like โ€œAluminum,โ€ in which singer Ed Robertson sings, โ€œYou can shine like silver all you want, but youโ€™re just aluminum.โ€ย

Creeggan said he gets as excited about recording new albums as he does about 2023โ€™s โ€œIn Flight.โ€ Creating music is fun for the band, especially Creeggan.

โ€œWith the process of making a record, you write a song, take a chance and scribble out something,โ€ he said.

โ€œIntroducing the song to the band is nerve-wracking, right? Because itโ€™s your little personal idea coming out and becoming more real. Ultimately, you have to play it for people.โ€

Creeggan is proud of his crafty doo-wop song โ€œJust Waitโ€ from โ€œIn Flight.โ€

โ€œWe really went doo-wop with it as a group,โ€ he said. โ€œWe did all these great doo-wop answer lines with the group; you know responding to the lead. Iโ€™m a big doo-wop fan. Itโ€™s always joyful to doo-wop with the audience as well. They love it and theyโ€™re doing this side-to-side snap thing. Itโ€™s amazing.โ€

Barenaked Ladies will soon embark on the โ€œLast Summer on Earth Tourโ€ with Fastball, Sugar Ray and Guster. Unfortunately, the tour will not stop in Arizona. Creeggan views tours like this as opportunities for continuing education.

โ€œThe shows have always evolved,โ€ Creeggan said. โ€œWeโ€™re enjoying playing songs from โ€˜In Flight.โ€™ I feel like the songwriting and the band keeps better and better.โ€

In May, the collective will release โ€œIn Flight โ€” Carry On,โ€ a seven-song acoustic record featuring tunes like โ€œEnough Timeโ€ and โ€œOne Night.โ€

โ€œWe just did an acoustic record,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™m excited to do these real simple versions of these tunes. All of a sudden, a new light shines on them. Itโ€™s always fun for me when we come up to the front of the stage and do it. Itโ€™s sort of Grand Ole Opry style. Be prepared for choreography to come your way, too. A little dancing is always enjoyable.โ€ย

Throughout their nearly 40-year career, Barenaked Ladies have forged friendships worldwide. Creeggan noted that itโ€™s enjoyable to observe fans and friends during the impromptu set that concludes the shows.ย

Heโ€™s been a musician long enough that he can play and watch the audience enjoying themselves.

โ€œI think a lot about the concentration,โ€ he said. โ€œThereโ€™s a point when youโ€™re playing the instrument and you just follow it. Your body follows it. It becomes this groove and it just guides you along.

โ€œThe actual playing and singing part of it becomes very intuitive. Thatโ€™s the beauty of it.โ€ย

He can even partake in the beauty of venues like Pine Knob Music Theatre in Independence Township, Michigan; and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

โ€œI was playing Red Rocks and I was looking at my hands the whole time,โ€ he said.

โ€œI looked up and I went, โ€˜Oh my God. Thereโ€™s a cathedral of beauty out there โ€” natural beauty and the people.โ€™ I think for our band thatโ€™s something we all have in common. We really like to engage with the audience.โ€ย
